3.65/170

Hello,
I was wondering if a lowish GPA and the fact that I'm Asian could be compensated by a good lsat score. I've been scoring around 170 (and I'm taking the LSAT in October). Right now I'm working on sections separately, and I found that I can reliably get my LG section down to 1 or 0 incorrect now (which didn't happen when I was scoring around 170 before) which will probably increase my overall score.
I was wondering if I had a chance at NYU or Columbia, assuming that I can get a LSAT score that is 170+ on the actual test.
I just wanted to know to see if it'd be worth applying come October.

Take the real LSAT first and then see what happens. Planning for all these hypothetical situations would just make you go crazy. Just spend that time studying for the LSAT.

Apparently being Asian is something to be compensated for?

Asian is an overrepresented minority, has as much trouble getting into law schools as Caucasian.
With that said, I'd say that with a 3.65 GPA, you'd need...
Columbia: 174
NYU: 172
170 wouldn't be good enough.. you're below both schools' GPA medians- being above their LSAT medians is a must.

Working on sections separately is fine when you are first starting out and trying to get the timing of each section down, or if you are trying to improve a certain section you are struggling with. However, you need to take a lot of full length, timed tests before you can get any realistic idea of what your score might look like. Taking sections by themselves and looking over your answers isn't too hard, but when you have like 15 seconds between sections and only one break, it is an entirely different story. A huge component to the LSAT is endurance.

3.63/171 here. Considering retaking b/c Columbia's my top choice. Good luck on the real thing!!

I'll be a bit more optimistic than Dr. Strangelove, I think a 173 and 171 respectively could get you in to CLS and NYU, although obviously higher scores would be beneficial.
Asian isn't going to boost you, so keep studying for the LSAT. With 4 months to go, getting mid to high 170s shouldn't be out of reach.

Seriously though, with that LSAT/GPA combo, you should get into some T10s. You might even have a shot at a school like Chicago if you ED, according to LSP. Everyone on LSN with your numbers combination got waitlisted, but I was too lazy to look and see if they ED'd or not.
edit: Didn't notice you haven't taken the LSAT yet. GOD these get annoying. Take the LSAT, come back to us, and we'll go from there. A 173+ should give you a shot at CCN. Seriously, you have so much time to study... just bust your ass studying and don't ask about this again until you have a real score.
