158/2.7 from Univ of Fla

+ 1 year work experience

Feel like I messed up on the LSAT and could get 164ish with a retake... but what am I looking at now? Live in FL... would like to go to UF/FSU or UM... highly doubt I could get into any of those as of now... how much would a mid 160s lsat help?

How much does my criminal record hurt me? Several Misdemeanors in my beginning years of college (mostly self destructive behavior which I will explain in the essay)

Thanks

I'm guessing one who takes 5 seconds to look at your username will be able to guess these self-destructive behaviors?

you're below the 25th GPA at all 3 of those schools. Only chance you have is to get a 75th LSAT and even then it's not a guarantee. Retake the LSAT and get at least a 164. Anything above a 165 and you should get into at least one of these schools.

what about UM... talking to ppl in the area they think i Have a chance at getting in for fall 2k10... applying late will hurt my chances even more... but its only $70 so i might as well apply i guess... I think 75th percentile is 160 at UM. My brother just graduated from UM med and a family member was in the first graduating class at UM law back in 1961 I think... not sure how much this will help though

If you want to apply, e-mail the admissions committee and ask for a fee waiver. I'm not sure if they would grant one, but it's worth a shot to ask.

I am from Florida. I was waitlsited at Miami with a 164 and 3.1 gpa. I applied in November. I also had a letter of rec from a miami alumnus and work exp ina law firm. Nothing is promised anymore... I would advise you to take the last again and score 165+. 165 is the new 164.

your gpa is whats hurting you the most.

I wouldn't waste your essay explaining low gpa or record. No need to remind them here about the weak parts to your application.

Write an addendum if (and only if) there are good reasons for such a low gpa (worked full time, major family problems, or health problems). Otherwise it will seem like you are just making excuses.

Best of luck

BTW- I would suggest applying to FIU

If you somehow get in, you will almost assuredly not get merit aid, leaving you heavily in debt for a school that's third best in FL behind UF and FSU with only one real major market, south FL. Not a good investment.

Retake.

Either you are leaving something out about your application or those are not your true numbers. A 3.1/164 is auto-admit at UM.

How did you manage a 2.7 GPA at a school that has no minus grades and offers such fine courses as Man's Food, Wildlife Issues (a course in which rapid mouse clicking is sufficient to result in 'earning' an 'A'), and Medical Terminology? I mean, really?

Minus grades are currently in effect at our University...I don't know how he managed a 2.7, but a 3.0-3.3 is very doable if you go out regularly and are in a semi-challenging major.

my numbers won't necessarily help, but they may give you a picture of what is necessary. I have a 2.67 and got a 167. I was rejected at UF and on hold at FSU. Didn't apply to Miami. I have been out of school for 8 years now and I expected for my GPA to get a little more distance than it did. UF was my top choice, and I thought I made that clear to them in my essay. My wife is a UF grad, so our hope was to go somewhere familiar. Anyway, I would either work for a few more years, (1 year doesn't mean much to anyone) and/or retake the LSAT. If you want UF you probably need at least a score in the 95% to go with your GPA. Just my two cents.

UF is a stickler about GPA's much more then FSU, they really want their applicants to be in the >3.5 range, even with a >75th% LSAT score. However, I do believe if you had a 3 in front of that GPA you would have had a MUCH better shot at an acceptance.

UM is going to be extra hard this year to get into I think. The new Dean is set on raising the ranking of the school (hence the recent +11 jump), and they took 500+ 1L's last year.
