Top Law Schools

What are my chances? I really want to study employment law.

I have applied to all the Chicago Schools as well and University of Illinois. I did not apply to Southern because I would like to work in Chicago, and they do not have a big presence there. I also applied to University of St. Thomas for fun because I really like the campus and Minnesota.

I am really contemplating retaking the LSAT. I self studied, had a study group, and had 5 hours of games tutoring from powerscore. If I were to retake I would take the virtual powerscore tutoring class (no classes offered by me), but I am worried that I may not do better. I took Dec 2009 test and did worse than my first diagnostic.

You did worse than your first diagnostic. It doesn't seem like there should be any question about whether you should retake.

You must know the answer to this...

You would have to be, literally, insane to not retake the LSAT. I don't even think there is a point answer this. Study, and come back to us with a 165.

Well my diagnostic was a 150 so I really didn't do that much worse, but didn't get better with studying.

Retake, seriously.

I wish I had your gpa, please study and retake. You owe it to yourself.

There's no real harm in serious study and a retake. It's not a matter of having to take the year off because, no offense, with your LSAT you'll be taking the year off anyway.

I prepared with the virtual powerscore course. It was fantastic--my score increased 12 points. If you're "studying" and your score is not increasing, then you simply aren't studying enough. You *should* be studying, at minimum, two hours per day, 7 days a week, for two months before taking the test if you want to see improvement. That's what I did and I jumped enormously.

Retake the LSAT.

I don't want to offend, but you would be hard pressed to do much worse. In a weird way, you are in kind of a lucky position in the sense that your score is so unambiguously bad that not retaking shouldn't even be an option.

As funny as it sounds with my gpa, its just really hard for me to study. I hate studying and always take breaks and get distracted. It was really hard to take a whole timed test without taking breaks in it. I will try a lot harder because I really don't want to take it a third time!!

your gpa is probably not indicative of your true aptitude... in fact, LSAT is the most important indicator for law schools because it balances out a subjective variable, that changes from university to university, professor to professor, class to class, etc. gpa is important in that it shows potential work ethic for rigorous course loads (like law school) but if you have a high gpa and extremely low lsat (like in your case), it will definitely..and i assure you, definitely raise red flags to admissions. your going to need to get at least a 155 to have a shot at depaul if you want to practice in chicago, otherwise id say you have 0 probably of getting into loyola, kent, nu, uchicago, uillinois. john marshall would probably admit you if you had a 150+ however employment prospects for a jmarshall grad are very poor. too tough of a market to compete in with so many good universities in the midwest.

Buy the logic reasoning and logic games bibles, study your butt off for the next 4 months (don't burn yourself out, of course), and do a lot better on the June test. Take a Kaplan course if you have access. If you're still not happy with your score you can retake in the fall. Hundreds of people on this site would give their right thumb for your GPA. If you can get your score into the 160s you are looking at an acceptance to UIUC and significant scholarship from Loyola and Depaul. Improvement of 10+ from diagnostic to test is no where near unheard of. Go and do it!

I also might add that I was working 30 hours a week, going to school full time, and visiting my mom in the hospital everyday while studying. I think that if I didn't have to worry about work I could study longer.

So how were you doing in PTs prior to the LSAT? Do you feel like you totally bombed the test, or was it a fairly typical effort?

How did you get a 4.0 if you can't focus for 3 hours straight?

I just never needed to study much. I would study for a half hour or hour before the class and be fine.

So how were you doing in PTs prior to the LSAT? Do you feel like you totally bombed the test, or was it a fairly typical effort?

The highest I got on a practice was a 154. I really felt like I knew the information and was getting the right answers, but I was doing bad.
