Top Law Schools

I just sent in all my applications last Friday and tonight. I realize it's late, but what's done is done and I don't want to wait until the next cycle.

I graduated from a good state school with a very high GPA (3.96, LSDAS 3.92) in math, an MS from a private university well-respected in engineering, and very good, unique softs. I also have about two years of work experience.

In my dreams I'd get into Columbia, second choice NYU. I applied to a ton of schools though because I got a lot of fee waivers and figured why not.

What are my chances in the T14?

realistic reach:
yale, harvard, stanford, columbia

target:
chicago, berkeley

strong target:
nyu, penn, mich

safety:
uva, duke, northwestern, georgetown, cornell

My only objection here is that I think Chicago is a reach. It's a realistic reach, but it's a reach.

Also, I think your chances at Yale are rather low, but that you should apply anyway, because honestly if you have any chance at Yale you should apply at Yale.

Try to write "Why X?" addendums for Penn, UVA, and Michigan if you can come up with stuff to genuinely like about those schools.

for as smart as you are, you haven't done much research if you're wondering what ur chances are at T14... anything after about T6 will be pretty much an admit for you.

p.s. since you applied to pretty much everywhere that gave u fee waivers, you're gonna get quite a few acceptances. Please keep in mind, if those spots serve no value to you, to let those schools know, so they can offer the spots to others.

just have to comment on reference to OP's chances at chicago: "target" status was based on LSN 08-09, lsat 170;gpa 3.8+ : 8/16 accepted straightaway, 3/16 rejected, 5 waitlisted, 1/5 accepted off waitlisted, 9/16 accepted straightaway or off waitlisted.

Absolutely, as soon as I get in somewhere I would prefer I will let the other schools know that I don't plan on attending. Since the two schools I really want are T6, after that my choice will be made probably by location and $$.

William and Mary - Accepted (2/3 scholarship)

Duke - Priority Reserve
Georgetown - Preferred Waiting List
U of Illinois - Waitlist

I'm happy about the acceptances but from what I read and heard about my chances the waitlists are making me nervous. Should I be?

I would guess you will be yield protected at a lot if schools, especially this late in the game. For sure Illinois is doing this and I would guess GULC and Duke may be too (although I am surprised at the WL at Duke). If I were you I would write letters to both Duke and GULC stating your interest in the school and how much you would like to attend.

I think this late in the game it's really tough to say and you probably will get WL'd at many places you would've gotten into earlier. I think of the top 6, your best shot is NYU.

omg how is this possible a 3.9 gpa and a 170 lsat is getting u wl at these schools?? that means i m gonna get rejected every where!

depending on how your cycle goes this year, if you're not satisfied you might want to consider just waiting and applying next year.

You could then ED Columbia, and apply early to NYU for a great chance at getting one of them.

If you ED NYU, then you'd basically be guaranteed admittance to your 2nd choice school.

MY SO applied with a 3.82 (3.73 degree) in early September, 170 and got into CCN RD. I don't see why you wouldn't fare the same.

Thank you for sharing, I figured as much, just wanted to hear it from someone though. I wonder if I should just withdraw before getting decisions now? I would love to get into CCN and have a decent shot at HYS early and can choose from all the options.

With a 3.92/170, I'd say you have a shot at Columbia and a very good chance at NYU, but ED would be a boost for either. I would suggest choosing one to ED unless you have some special softs or HYP UG that makes you competitive for HYS.

I do have some rather special softs, I am not sure how they will be perceived/valued but I doubt that many (if any) people have equal narratives. I'd love a fair shot at HS by applying early. I rushed to apply this cycle because I am getting older and I wanted to shave a year off of school. I know there was no guarantees in life, I didn't know that I would actually get a 170, so the score changed things for me now that my numbers are T6 feasible (I would have gone wherever I can get in if I scored worse). I'd love to have gotten in at Penn (and maybe some $) but the WL pretty much got me thinking to reapply. I can't ride the waitlist with kids and parents to make arrangements for.

Do you think I should withdraw now or see how it turns out? I keep thinking there may be some negatives in getting in but turning down, esp. if CCN is my target next year?

Reapply. If you're more of a risk-averse guy, you'll get scholarships too as long as you apply early in September.

Also, if you wait, you will have a much better shot at scholarship money.

Waitlisted at Harvard, Columbia, UPenn, and UCLA. No $$ from Northwestern. Still waiting on NYU/Chicago/Cornell but am betting on more waitlists. Sigh.

I'm in at Michigan, out at Yale, WL Penn/Gtown/Duke/UVA. All withdrawn. Pending at H/C/N/Cornell. Reapplication in the works obviously.
