true, but there is a bit of randomness in the process. the returns although they tend to follow a pattern have some 'noise' or 'disturbance' (sorry, the math geek in me talking). if you have your heart truly set somewhere (or would like to attend), better to apply and find out rather than not apply and not get in. just my 2 cents

what do you think of my list?

Off the top of my head, I think you have a wayyyyyyyy better chance at Boalt than UVA. Actually, UVA is probably your biggest reach outside of Stanford and NYU.

i hope so...boalt is my dream school. i'm just kinda worried because i'm not a really 'interesting person' in terms of soft factors (i.e. non-URM, haven't really done anything too exciting, no 'sob' story about growing up in less than ideal conditions, etc.)

hopefully my GPA and LSAT will be enough for boalt or UCLA (my top 2 choices)

There are plenty of typical non-URM kids getting into Boalt on LSN with our numbers, so i don't think it should be a problem.

Virginia, on the other hand, usually only dips down to our level if we are from Virginia. Boalt doesn't seem to mind if you're an interstate traveler.

sorry, this might be a stupid question, but how do you use LSN when you have multiple LSAT scores with a 9 pt gap? do you find people who have your average score and a similar GPA, or is there some way of searching to find people that actually happen to have both of your scores? is it best just to use the most conservative estimate and look at people who have the average score?

Look at everyone one point lower than you. DON'T look at averages, because some people put their highest while others actually average, throwing off all results.

Exclude average, int'l, and URM.

The assumption is, your highest will beat out anything lower, but if someone else got it in one try they trump your multi-score high.

That should give you a good estimate as to how ad-comms will treat your LSAT score, assuming you're at least at the 25th percentile and not a URM.

I tend to look at the average with mine (161, 169), and get real disappointed when I see that those with just the 169 did oh so much better with admissions...

Well, you're disappointing yourself for no reason.

At worst, they'll treat you like you have a 168.9, and at best, you'll beat out just as many 169's assuming your soft-factors are comparable.

80% of top 15.
75% of top 20.
~35% of top 80.

From the looks of it, I'm one of the most pessimistic people around here.

Look at the Deloggio site, and the explanation of how Adcomms look at scores; they are actually *rewarded* by the rankings to only take into account your highest score.

In the tons of time I spent on LSN, I couldn't find any difference between those that had taken it multiple times and those that hadn't which seems to bear out what one would assume based on the new policies.

Like I said, even if they'd rather have someone that only took it once (I don't think this is necessarily true), you'd still be a more attractive candidate for them than someone a point lower than the highest.

Pretend like you are a clean 172, and apply with that in mind. Outside of Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, I don't think too many adcomms are going to ding you for taking it twice.

hey ed, i'm looking at LSN for boalt. searched for LSAT range of 165-167 (about where we are) and GPA of 3.9 to 3.95. i only found 2 who were accepted (when excluding URM, multiple LSATs, and international). i'm just wondering how you are finding that there are plenty of people with our numbers who got into boalt. thanks

Well I'll thank you for keeping my spirits high then! Until my next LOR comes in, I'll be redoing every portion of 15 apps. It's getting really pathetic. I'm lucky I've only got 13 credits this semester, cuz I haven't done much homework in the past week, maybe longer.

oh ok...probably because u did a search parameter of greater than a max of 3.95. (my LSAC adjusted GPA is 3.92 lower than 4.0!) but at least degree granting GPA is 4.0 so maybe that counts for something.


i have a feeling my GPA might take a hit this semester; we are not required to send in our fall semester transcripts right? and when a school reports their GPA/LSAT numbers to ABA, GPA only takes into account the first 3 years right?

btw, when the law schools release their GPA data to the ABA for the purposes of rankings, they usually only report the first 3 years right because most LSAC doesn't require you to update your transcript after the fall semester? therefore, senior year grades wouldn't matter too much?

Does anyone have any thoughts on my chances at U Chicago?

I have a 3.5 gpa, 172 LSAT, medium soft factors and one year of work experience. I'm not URM. Any feedback is appreciated.

I'm pretty scared of getting shot down by you guys, and I'm a huge believer in taking chances, but maybe I'm just being unrealistically optimistic with my list...

GPA: 3.67 (Top 40 school, double major)
LSAT: 168 (25% for most of these schools, hoping a solid PS can help me out)

Super-reaches: NYU, Chicago, UPenn (is it even worth trying to apply to Boalt? Dream school Columbia? )

wuhoo, give it a go at boalt. GPA is a little lower than they'd ideally like, but I think they, more than most schools give a comprehensive evaluation (i.e. they look beyond the numbers).

as cliche as it is, the only way you dont' get it is if you don't apply!

hell, i'm a super long shot at stanford and harvard but i'm giving it a go. there was a guy last year on law school numbers with my identical numbers who got into harvard and he was non-URM.

So I've posted my list in here before . . . but with a 163/3.83:

I am applying to UVA because I received a fee waiver, and because I have Virginia residency, as well as Georgetown, would I possibly have a shot at Cornell as well? I know these are all reaches, but if I have the extra $80 or so, is it even worth my time?

I'm trying to find schools in the T20 that love GPA . . . or I could write an LSAT addendum explaining why I don't think one standardized test is a good predictor of my ability in school?
