173 and 3.85 chance at Northwestern without an interview?

173 LSAT
3.85 GPA
In undergrad
Was not able to interview

I am interested in Northwestern however, I have heard that the interview is essentially required for admissions if you are coming straight from undergrad. Does anyone have any insight on this?

Thanks!

I'd say you're screwed.

Why Northwestern, just out of curiosity?

With those numbers, you could go somewhere ranked higher -- including (most likely) UChicago, if that's where you're interested in practicing.

To be honest, I was hoping for a chance of full ride conditioned upon a one year deferral. I am guessing this is out of the question though... Would U Chicago with no money be better than the former in your opinion?

IMO, yes.

If you're interested in a deferral anyway, why don't you just wait 'til next cycle to apply? You could definitely get money at a lot of schools, especially applying in September or October.

Unfortunately, I applied last month. If I got into schools this year, and reapplied to the same schools next cycle, do you think I would be auto rejected?

With those numbers, I kinda doubt it. However, I don't have any real evidence to go on for that claim, just my intuition. Were you planning on asking for a deferral regardless of what school you decided to attend?

No, I would only consider it for reapplication purposes.

With those numbers, you should have your pick of CCN and have a shot at Harvard. And I definitely wouldn't give up Harvard even for a full ride at Northwestern.

I got into NU with no interview and in fact accidentally skipped my interview. I think that you are probably fine. Also, I agree with other posters. You have very good shot at CCN and will likely be given strong consideration at both Harvard and Stanford ... forget about NU! Good luck!

I think the whole "straight from undergrad thing" is going to screw you a lot more than not having an interview.

You might get a 1 year deferral + full ride with those numbers. If you do, I'd take that over CCN sticker. The difference in opportunities is not worth $150k. HYS is a different matter though.

Opps, I didn't see that ... yeah, from what I know, you are going to have to interview then coming straight from undergrad. Nevertheless, you #'s with an interview strongly suggest that you may still be one of the handful of undergrads that they are willing to admit. Again, you're bound to get into a much better school than NU.

I have already been accepted to NYU and it seems that a few of you would consider that better than the hypothetical full ride opportunity at Northwestern. Would that be a correct inference?
Or, is it definitely a rejection without the interview from undergrad?

Thanks for the replies.

You'd be crazy to turn down full-ride at NU for sticker at NYU.

I think that straight from undergrad, the full-ride is unlikely. Although 35% are reported to receive scholarship money, LSN reports that NU only gives out full scholarships 1-2% of the enrolling students and only 16% receive half-tuition. That being said, I would certainly attend NYU at sticker over NU at half tuition.

You might have the numbers, it seems like ~ full-ride at NU is possible for 3.9ish, 171+ types.

But look at this graph, even most who got full rides didn't take it, proving the point that it's hard to pass up HYS or the T6 with those numbers:

This is with respect to only those who matriculated.

To update:

For any interested, I did end up getting $135k conditioned upon a 1 yr deferral from Northwestern without interview and straight from undergrad. So, it is possible....

Yes, because you have YHS numbers, LOL.

I'll reiterate my advice: if you want to practice in Chicago (and probably NYC), full ride at NU > sticker CCN, no contest.

But the more relevant decision is full ride at NU + 1 year deferral vs sticker CCN. That 1 year deferral could be the dealbreaker depending on what one could do during that year off, and one's future outlook on the economy.

If he has any decent job during the year it'd probably be worth it. OCI 2012 will surely be better than OCI 2011.

I'd take the one year off and get some relative legal WE. That will put you on a more fair competition level with NU grads because most likely they will all have WE.

And yes, I'd take the full ride from NU over CCN sticker.
