Emory PS

Post by nematoad » Tue Jan 05, 2010 7:36 pm

The application says "The Personal Statement should not exceed two typed pages (single or double spaced). Applicants will disadvantage themselves by disregarding this limit".
I feel like the single spaced part is a trick or something.
Has anyone submitted their Emory PS single spaced? My essay is currently 3 pages double-spaced and it'd be nice if i didn't have to cut it down.

I did. I preferred to send it single space than to risk not adhering to the 2 page limit that they seem to be very strict about.

I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else submitted their PS single spaced as well. Could they really hold it against you if you submit a three page DS shortened to one and a half pages SS? Those tricky bastards....

So i don't need to PM those interested, here is my messages to the Admissions office regarding this issue:

Dear Admissions Officer,

I am in the process of applying to your law school. I have one question, however, regarding the guidelines for the length of the personal statement. The instructions on the application read as follows:

"The personal statement should not exceed two typed pages (single- or double-spaced). Applicants will disadvantage themselves by disregarding this limit."

I can't help but find the wording of your guideline regarding document length to be a bit ambiguous. Do you mean to say that the personal statement submitted ought to be able to stand in either single- or double-space form and not exceed two pages? Or does this mean that a single-spaced personal statement under the two page limit, which would otherwise exceed this limit if it were expanded to double-spacing, would be acceptable?

I appreciate any feedback you can give me in this matter.

Sincerely,

Sean Degarmo

Hi Sean,

The committee members will be reviewing all files online. If you are
able to limit your personal statment to two, doulbe spaced, pages it
will allow the committee members to review your personal statement
with greater ease and speed.

basically they leave it to your discretion to pick 2 pages single or double, but they made it clear they prefer 2 pages double

Thanks for the info, sdegarmo. My personal statement is currently a little over one page -- single spaced. I'm thinking mine will end up being approximately 1.5 single spaced... hopefully that will not put me at any disadvantage (I don't see why it would).

...oh how I wish I wasn't applying so late in the cycle

In reference to my last post, do any of y'all think I'm at a significant disadvantage applying to emory this late in the cycle. I'm still waiting on my last letter of rec to be submitted, so it could take another 2 weeks (max) to be processed. My lsdas gpa is 3.33 and my lsat is 166... starting to worry
