I'm planning to visit a number of schools. Should I try to shake them down for more money when I'm on campus, or wait until later?

Definitely try to shake em' down on premise. Deans and endowed professors tend to carry the most cash on-hand.

Don't forget watches and jewelry. Easy to pawn.

I'd prob do it in an email. Unless other people have had more luck negotiating in person.

Considering our (future) profession, I'd assume you'd want it in writing. Not because they'd lie, but because they forget your name/mistake you for someone else/die/change their mind.

If they invited you, to ASW, they're your hosts. I'd rather take the time to enjoy/scope out/gauge the school than wait for an opportunity to negotiate; doesn't seem like the proper time to me. The staff is probably focused on showing off and trying to shake them down would seem jarring.

You can rewrite , edit, ruminate on your email before sending it, but once you say something, it's out there. No matter how much you practice what you're going to say, you never know what their response will be.

Broaching the subject by way of a polite, artfully worded email is the way to go. You can perhaps mention in this email that you'll be visiting (include the date) and suggest that you'd appreciate the opportunity to discuss it in person if possible. This expresses your genuine interest in the school and gives the finaid office the opportunity to either deal with you digitally or face-to-face, whichever they prefer. Best of both worlds.
