I saw some discussion about this on the University of Minnesota thread over in the law school acceptances area, and it looks like some people were bidding $40/night on priceline and getting it. I am staying with a friend one night, then Friday night I'm getting a hotel downtown, though I haven't actually booked one yet. There is a list with "University of Minnesota discount rates" on the admitted students page, but it sounds like those are actually more expensive than what you can find on your own. I would suggest deciding whether you want to stay downtown or by the school, then just bidding on priceline. I chose downtown, because Friday night after the reception there will most likely be people exploring the city, and this way I'll be right there when it's done.LSATurday wrote:Yes. Is there a good place to stay?
I'm getting in a day early as well, so +1 to this.bags716 wrote:I'll be leaving tomorrow morning! I'm pretty excited. I'll be getting in a day early and staying an extra day so I can check out the city. Can anyone recommend anything to see?
It was fantastic. You weren't there I take it? Career serevices, current students, clinical programs, professors, I found it to all be great, and all the other prospective students I talked to seemed to like it as well.tropicalpeach wrote:I want to hear the reactions to the ASW!
I think they overplayed the "national" aspect a little too much. Pretty much every school will place around the nation. I dont see it being very feasible to be from outside of say, NY, and having UMN place me there.Tim0thy222 wrote:It was fantastic. You weren't there I take it? Coming from the bay area, and considering NYC as my other favorite option, I wasn't feeling Minneapolis, but I think I could handle it. I am now more convinced UMN has national reach, though I do think it will take a little leg work. Definitely the first school I've visited that I believed when they said it was national.
it was absolutely gorgeous today, FTRSandro wrote:And I just got a weird vibe from some of the current students and even the perspective, not that they matter too much. Good school but I dont see it making much sense if you arent set on the midwest/Minnesota and can consider 45 and sunny a "gorgeous" day
I don't think they overplayed it. They were incredibly blunt in mentioning that if you want a job outside of the Midwest, you're going to have to put in a lot of legwork. UMN helps you by providing an off-campus interview event in NY, SF, and CHI, but you've got to be the one to demonstrate sufficient ties/interest to prospective employers.Sandro wrote:I think they overplayed the "national" aspect a little too much. To me national means a school will open doors across America that arent your normal doors that a regional school will open. Going to any school outside your region allows you to access that market to some extent, as well as your home market you have ties to. If Minnesota opens these doors across america why does their placement lag other t25 schools?athenian wrote:I don't think they overplayed it. This is true of every school outside the T-10. Minnesota won't assure you a shot of NY or California, but it doesn't make jobs there an impossibility.
Certainly you've got a larger chance of "national" placement from a school that has been continually in or around the top 20 than a perennially lower ranked regional school (like Indiana, Emory, Davis, UGA, etc.)
I really enjoyed ASW and was impressed by everyone I spoke with. I think the most valuable part of the second day was the breakout Q&A sessions with Financial Aid and the head of Study Abroad programs (though this probably reflects my bias!). Financial aid talked about the LRAP for students who go into public interest work, and it seemed like it was a great option, especially as the funding available for graduates going into PI work is increasing. The study abroad programs were discussed in some detail-- there are over ten programs now, and any scholarships you have to MN transfer.FourOnTheFloor wrote:I skipped the second day in favor of exploring the city more. Was anything interesting said during the career center presentation or the Q&A with the Dean? Either way, I'll be sending in my deposit soon.
