Hey visiting Columbia tomorrow morning and sitting in on 2 classes any advice on things i should be looking for ? I am new to the city as a LA kid . Also places in NYC to go out this week and weekend? I have been to Dream which has been my favorite great looking people. The best bartending I have experienced in awhile. They actually bought me 2 rounds after talking to them. been to Modern to eat was great. Saw Wicked and Jersey Boys which were both great. But ne thing would help

I posted this in another thread, but we're showing our apartment from 1:30-2:15 tomorrow (unfurnished two-bedroom). We'll also be at the cocktail party, which is always fun and full of free drink and food. Yay!

What cocktail party? Is this part of the formal ASW? Also is anyone going to the NYU events this week also? It overlaps on Thursday with Columbia, so I'm trying to figure what things to go to.

Yes - it's from 6-8 PM on Wednesday night in the lobby of William & June Warren Hall, right next to the main law school building.

I'll be at this weeks admitted students weekend. Lem, I might make it to your party. AW, I'm going to NYU's ASW also, but only the friday portion.

That is... if I can make it there. My ride got pulled over and I missed my flight. Hopefully I'll see you all soon!

We're not having a party until next ASW (since our PILF auction is on Thursday night). Unless you're referring to the apartment showing, which is less of a party and more of people hanging around in our living room asking questions. We will also be at the CLS cocktail party on Wednesday, which will be almost as fun. Good luck with your flight!

I was referring to the cocktail party, but I guess if it is not this ASW, then... I might come to the apartment showing instead!

Just curious what everyone thought.

I had a great great great time. At least half of the people I met were interested in PI or govt. work, so my visit dispelled any notions of CLS being particularly corporate- or biglaw-focused.

All of the classes I sat in on and faculty lectures were really interesting and engaging. I'm sure every school puts their best face forward during ASDs, and everything, but I really had a wonderful experience.

I got into CCN, and I'm visiting NYU in late March, but I'm 90% sure I'm going to end up at CLS (partly b/c I did NYU undergrad and got a job on campus after graduating, so I'm ready for a change of pace).

Happy to answer any other questions about the ASDs!

1) TLSers: Yes! And they were totally awesome =D

2) Parties: Definitely! This ASD happened to coincide with the Public Interest Auction, which looked like one of the biggest formal events of the year. All the visiting admitted students got in for free. There was a big cocktail reception the first night too, and after that, the student organizations had a bunch of their own parties, many of which were at local bars. All of the above had free booze. There was a lot of free food the second day; I'd recommend bringing some snacks the first day.

3) Favorite event: hard to say, I liked different events for very different reasons. The faculty lectures I saw were really fascinating and diverse (in terms of the topics covered). The other admitted students were very approachable--everyone was eager to meet other admits--which was great. Current students were at many of the events too, and it was nice to meet so many of them (basically, I'll already have friends on campus when I arrive). I really liked everyone I met!

4) CLS Admins/professors: Ariela Dubler and Trevor Morrison both gave really amazing lectures. On the admin side, I had the most interactions with Jill Nussbaum; she and the rest of the admissions people were very eager to please, and Jill actually introduced me to a few current students. They were all working really hard the whole weekend, and very helpful whenever I had a question or anything.

5) I did see a student apartment; it was unfurnished and in a non-Columbia building. The apartment was very nice and they were actually getting a really good deal on it. After seeing it and talking to current students, I'm actually thinking that I'll apply for housing through the university (I'm looking for something around or under 900/month). What's nice is that you apply, they make an offer, then you can either accept it and put down a deposit, or decline and find your own housing. So you're not locked into university housing just by applying.

6) Law building: I thought the facilities were very nice. The main law building is just off of the quad, and it is a very "modern" building. True, it doesn't have the centuries-old architecture of some of the rest of the campus, but all of the old campus buildings on the quad do. so if you're really jonesin' for some stone, pillars, latin etchings, etc., you can just stroll over to the quad and be like "ooo pretty." Some people think the law building is ugly; I don't really care all that much, honestly.

I thought the Public Interest Auction was a blast. Several Professors were the auctioneers, there were some amazing items to purchase (some went for thousands of dollars), and overall it was simply tons of fun.

I visited with one or two admins I didn't like very well at the time (which were not participating in the ASW, but were just sitting around their office), mostly because they were simply... abrupt. However, they were very straight forward, so no real problems. Several of the administrators however really very, very kind and fun to be around.

I didn't see a single parent. SOs and guests would obviously be a bit more difficult to tell, but out of those I spoke with I didn't run into any non-Admitted Students.

Most had some sort of notebook or notepad. I'm not sure how much they filled them up however. Maybe just a few thoughts here and there.

Were people wearing jeans or did everyone go business casual (it says somewhere in our stuff that most people do business casual..)?
I didn't really noticed dress at CLS, but I did notice a big difference between CLS and NYU, where NYU had lots of jeans and t-shirts. So, I'm assuming there must have not been many jeans and t-shirts at CLS... I'd say you would feel quite comfortable in business causal.

NYU is definitely the "buildings in the city" feel. CLS feels like a real campus with all the buildings only about 1 block away from each other, just outside of the undergrad campus. The public interest auction was held at the undergrad campus.

Thanks for the answers indy, very helpful! It's funny that nyu and columbia have such a different vibe that everyone dresses differently for the same type of event.

A lady named Jill was very nice and recognized me by name. The dean of admissions was very helpful and I felt like she knew me too. There was also a younger looking man who I really enjoyed speaking with. We had a running joke between the two of us the entire ASW. It was a pleasure seeing him around. I've heard the administration at Columbia was terrible, but I enjoyed seeing them around and I could imagine campus being a fun place if I continued making friends with administration as I did during ASW.

What were the student apartments like (if you saw them)?
I was fairly impressed by the apartments. I was expecting small, but most were larger than my expectations. Lenfest seems to have this reputation for being super nice, but I thought it wasn't that great. I think you had less room there than the other places I looked at and it felt too hotelish for me. I really liked Lionsgate, although I hear it's probably the most expensive university housing. There was also another place... somewhere - I want to say it was on 113th, but I think that might be Lionsgate. This place was just a regular old apartment complex. It was smaller, but had a real homey feel to it, which I enjoyed.

What did you think of the law building?
The law building felt pretty institutional (as opposed to NYU's building for instance, which felt like a really big home). The main lobby has tack boards everywhere so the walls seem lined with flyers. The furniture and other parts of the building seem a bit run down, but it's not that bad. Some of NYU's furniture looks just as old. CLS all looks fairly modern, so if you are in to that, you will probably like it. The general consensus seemed to be that the law students didn't really like the law building, and didn't like studying in the library, but would prefer to go to the undergrad campus and study in better looking libraries there.
