Washington and Lee and Wake Forest really like it when applicants visit and it does play a part in the decision.

I actually emailed WL a couple days ago to request/plan a visit after Christmas...not that it will help me when they make a decision BEFORE then, but oh well I'd really like to go see the campus.

It depends on the schools you're applying to, obviously. If you're going to NYU and Columbia I'm assuming you're looking at Penn, which is the closest T-14 to the former two (albeit a good chunk of time to get from NYC to Philly). Visiting at these schools isn't really much of a soft, unless you're using it for a letter of continuing interest.

you can hop a boltbus or megabus really cheap from nyc to philly (2.5 hr bus ride). cheap and easy. i would add penn if you figure out the logistics for being in philly.

Boston is also easy/cheap from NYC.

I wouldn't spend a dime on visiting a school before you get in.
