To check out the school and the area, to get a feel for it. You can actually learn a lot, and a lot of people have fallen in love with schools or got turned off by visiting in person. I've visited a couple, Stanford and Berkeley up in the Bay Area. It was good for me, first time in Berkeley, and I get what everyone is talking about when they describe Berkeley . As far as Stanford, well I fell in love with it hardcore lol, it's absolutely amazing. Crossing my fingers that I can get in .

I've visited a couple. When I visit, I mainly want to see if the school is in a bad area. If you've never lived in the city the school is in, it's hard to get a feel for how nice/crappy the area is without actually going to visit.
