Asking a law school to cover airfare for ASD?

Post by eam829 » Tue Jan 19, 2010 3:54 pm

What's the protocol on asking if a school will cover your airfare to visit them for an admitted student day? I'm on the East Coast but there are a few schools in Cali I've already been accepted to and would like to visit. Is it kosher to ask if they're willing to subsidize the airfare and for those of you who have done this, how did you ask?

I can't tell you whether or not to ask, but my gut feeling is that they're going to deny you. It's just too varied from person to person. How would they decide to pay for your bus ticket vs. someone else's ticket from across the country? It's not like fee waivers where it's the same price for everyone. Traveling costs can get up there. And then where does it stop? There's hotel cost, etc.

I've certainly never heard of anyone requesting it from the school.

It's certainly worth a shot to ask - it's not like they are going to rescind your offer of admission. If you truly have financial need, you may get some assistance. If you just don't feel like paying for it, it's less likely. Plenty of schools pay at least part of your travel costs, so it's not a ridiculous request.

I asked one school (which I wouldn't visit without travel assistance) if it was availabe, and I was immediately e-mailed back a request form to fill out. I haven't returned it yet, so I don't know if it will be granted or not, but the fact that they have the request form makes me think it's a pretty standard request.

Thanks for the input! I'm definitely going to ask, just in case.
