Incoming 1L seeking advice!!!

Hey everyone, :D I want to ask about the available classes in Law School. I heard from some advisors that the first year of law school is just the foundations and that it is cut and dry. However, in your second year you become able to explore your desired legal expertise. Will I be blocked from choosing any other class or is it heavily advised that I don't choose any other classes? For instance, my advisors also say that 1L's shouldn't work, advisable or banned???

1L classes depend on your school. In many (most?) schools, your schedule is set for you and you simply don’t get to take anything else. Some schools do allow you to take one elective, sometimes only in spring semester, and often you choose within a selection of classes, not every class that’s actually being offered. If your school offers that, no reason not to do it, though probably ask around to find out what the workload is like.

Many schools have rules against 1Ls working (although plenty of people still do, they just don’t tell their school). If your school doesn’t ban 1Ls working (or you’re fine with breaking that rule), it’s probably best to avoid working at the very least for the first semester, if you can avoid it, so you can get a better sense of how much time you need to do well in school. One exception is maybe something like bartending, where you can pick up shifts for times you’d be less likely to be studying anyway, and you can put it on hold during crunch times.
