How long to keep hope after interviews

Post by esquire661 » Tue Apr 06, 2021 2:29 pm

Finished round 2 interviews with 2 big firms about 2 & a half weeks ago. They each told the recruiter that they finished up with interviews a week and a half ago and should be letting us know soon. Last week they said they hadn't made a decision yet, but I can't imagine it would take this long to just let someone know whether its a yes or a no. Anyone else been in this position?

I always assume in these situations that I'm probably a second or third choice and they're waiting to hear if their first or second choice says no before getting to you. You might not be totally out, but I wouldn't count on it after 2 weeks.

That's what I figured too. I wish they'd at least say that!

Keep in mind that lateral hiring isn’t like OCI - it takes longer to line up everyone and decide, esp if a particular decision maker happens to be caught up in stuff.

That said, the best way to approach this stuff is to assume you haven’t got the job and go about your business until you hear otherwise.

I had a callback almost seven weeks ago now. I had written it off a few weeks ago, but then they asked to discuss comp expectations. That was two weeks ago, so I'm close to writing it off again.

I was once flat-out told it could take up to 6 months before they could reach a decision.

I later found out that the firm was not only interviewing associates, but also looking for new partners in that practice area - they wanted to line up candidates, but ultimately, it all depended on the partners they would attract

At least you were told. I just wrapped up a fifth round of interviews this week and still have no idea when I can expect a decision. 6 weeks of interviews.

I recently got an offer 2 weeks after a callback. I'm assuming I was the second choice but I thought I'd add that data point.
