If I had some money, on the other hand.....

Tuition only I have: 48K at GW, 15K at W&M, 4K at W&L, 10K at Illinois as my top four choices right now. I just can't justify GW with those other options.
4k at W&L? Jesus Christ what are you waiting for? I'd take that in a heart beat.
Don't get me wrong, I like W&L, but I like GW (and Fordham) more and I think that their reputations in their cities are traditionally better. W&L is probably fourth (after GULC, GW, W&M) on the DC school pecking order, not to mention T14s.
Well, I have a friend right now an 1L at W&L and she told me their OCI looks good - for DC. Of course you have to look at this with a grain of salt. She was also like you deciding between GW and W&L. She supposedly loves it there.

Well must be nice to be in your shoes.

Anybody going to the Admitted Students Reception in Philly?
Anybody know if those things are worth it? Good info/Adcomms to impress for $$$/free food?

I guess I'll ask if anyone's going to the Chicago student reception. I haven't RSVP'd yet, but I imagine I will be there.

Hey all,

So I visited GW over the long weekend. I was supposed to meet a person from admissions to give me a tour (already accepted, so it wasn't like for an interview or anything). After driving 8 hours from Vermont to get there, he never showed up.... He never told me he wasn't going to be there, and when I e-mailed him and said I was sorry I missed him and took a tour of the building myself, he said he was sorry and that he forgot about it.... So that was a ding right there. Then while I was walking around the school, I would walk by a group of students talking amongst themselves. When I got close, they stopped talking, kinda glared at me, and waited until I was past them to start talking again. This happened many times, too. That, combined with the de-personalized atmosphere that I got from GW is really making it hard for me to like them. There was nothing special about any of their rooms or the building in general. Overall, this is why you visit law schools. If I never visited GW, I probably would have went. Now that I know I would be miserable for 3 years, I am strongly thinking of not going there. It is still an option, but one that is not very likely unless they end up giving me lots of money (which is also unlikely).

I might. It's in a new hotel downtown that's supposed to be really cute.

That sucks!!

I will go ahead and schedule a tour of the school next week and see what happens.....G.W. always sounded like an ideal school.

What was it that bothered you about the students who stopped talking when you got close to them? Were you hoping that they would be more friendly?

It wasn't even that I wanted them to be friendly. But I would think that someone who stops talking as you get close and shoot you a little glare don't really want you around. If they didn't acknowledge my existence at all, I would have been just fine. But acknowledging it in that way was very off-putting.

I don't disagree that those students' behavior would be really off-putting to me, but I don't necessarily think its fair to judge a school in large part due to the snottiness of a couple people; there are going to be rude people everywhere. Sometimes you do have to go with your gut, and if you don't think that GW is right for you, then that's cool, but I wonder if its worth another try with a student guide (who actually shows up) etc.

I wasn't trying to imply that all students at GW would be snotty like that. I'm sure that there are plenty of great people there. I was just trying to convey that the entire experience in general wasn't very welcoming :? . It scares me that deposits are due on April 1st, and since I am in undergrad up in Vermont, it will be hard to get down there again, especially with other schools I need to visit over Spring Break in March (UIUC, Ohio State). If W&M/BC doesn't come through for me and I am still undecided after UIUC and tOSU, then maybe I will make another trip down there. The great IP program and location are really big pluses for me, but we will see (especially if I have to pay sticker) :( .

I think there's an LSAT LR answer for this - insufficient sample size.

As a 2L, I can say that GW is a great place to be. Friendly students, friendlier profs, and easy access to internships during the year at DoJ/the Hill/Everything Else. I wouldn't base your decision on a couple freaked out 1Ls working on their memos.

Accepted, no money. I'm disappointed, but in no way considering taking out $70,000 a year for GW. Jesus.

Unless I magically get into NYU before the Boston event, I will be going.

Hopefully I can beg for money there.

If you actually break it down, I think the 70k is a really inflated number. Remember, that's just the max that you CAN take, not necessarily what you need to get by. They have to figure in things like a brand new computer; an apartment near the school (which can be done more cheaply than they say); insurance (which you may or may not have already), etc. I get that its a lot of money regardless of whether its 50k or 70k, but I think the 70 scares a lot of people off, and it isn't necessarily completely accurate.

When you consider that I've gotten a substantial amount of money from a school ranked 2 less, and can expect at least something from a school ranked 10 better, it becomes quite off-putting.

I decided to go to the Philly ASR. The place is like 10 mins from my house so i figured what's there to lose? Plus the more the merrier so maybe we can build some momentum. Perhaps I'll see you and umichgrad there. hoping for a delicious spread. maybe we should start a rumor about an open bar?

Also waiting to hear details from anyone who went to one last year or from the early ones next week.
