posted this in another thread, but no replies thus far and seems to be more traffic here
A bit more specific question regarding scholarships/the matching program...Need a bit of reading comprehension help here.
"Merit-Only Scholarships: Criteria for selection include standardized test scores, cumulative grade point average, leadership, extracurricular activities, and other performance criteria, i.e., leadership positions in student organizations, etc.
Need, Disadvantage, or Adversity Scholarships: Scholarships are awarded using a variety of factors that include financial need, demonstrated commitment to public service, history of overcoming economic or other disadvantage, overcoming disability, service in the armed forces, and other factors, including standardized test scores and cumulative grade point average.
Merit and Need Scholarships: Criteria for these scholarships include merit criteria and financial need. For academic year 2009–2010, 80 percent of scholarship aid was merit/need-based."
quoted from UT Law schools sholarship link. From what i gather, these are three distinct categories: merit, need, and merit/need. I was told that a 167 LSAT was required by a financial aid rep. for merit scholly's, when i asked if this 167 requirement counted for the 80% of scholarships that were given out that were merit AND need based, she seemed to not really know what I was talking about...
Am I reading the site wrong??

The continuing education price is the locked in rate that 2Ls and 3Ls get to keep paying. Incoming 1Ls on the other hand pay something slightly more. Next year if they choose to increase tuition, our rates will be listed under the continuing education column and the new incoming 1Ls (those a year behind us) would have the increased rate. I think they try to hold your tuition constant.

That is definitely a little ambiguous. My interpretation is that the LSAT requirement holds for this and the pure merit category. Thus, 80% + whatever is merit-only

They do, but there is no guarantee that it will hold for us over the 3 years. From what I hear it was a surprise for it to be held for this years 2Ls.gitls wrote:The continuing education price is the locked in rate that 2Ls and 3Ls get to keep paying. I also agree that probably only need-based aid is exempt from any kind of LSAT requirement. However, I doubt if you need aid and have a 166 they would pass you up completly for need/merit aid.

How do they even award need/merit or need aid? Doesn't come at admissions, so when are you notified if you are awarded anything?bmontminy wrote:Yeah, thats what i was afraid of =-(...My 166 won't net me crap then =-/....I am going to have to attempt to do well in my financial aid appeal...I wonder if it is customary to send a letter/e-mail with your appeal as a sort of 'Why i deserve more moniez'...kittenmittons wrote:That is definitely a little ambiguous. In all my interactions with the admissions and financial aid office, they have been open and cordial. You could probably send along an email detailing circumstances that may warrant a more in-depth look at your FA situation. Worst case they ignore you.bmontminy wrote:Yeah, thats what i was afraid of =-(...My 166 won't net me crap then =-/....I am going to have to attempt to do well in my financial aid appeal...I wonder if it is customary to send a letter/e-mail with your appeal as a sort of 'Why i deserve more moniez'...kittenmittons wrote:That is definitely a little ambiguous. From UT Law FA websiteOnce the University has received a student’s FAFSA information and any required verification documents, the University will send an Electronic Financial Aid Notification (EFAN) by e-mail. The EFAN will list all eligible awards. Students can view their awards and respond. Students can accept or decline the awards offered, and/or reduce the loan amounts offered.

if this is really what you think, then there's really no point in arguing with you.rockchalk86 wrote:Like I said before, Michigan offered less money than Texas... you can't negotiate with that. The difference in school quality is so marginal between the two. Texas offered more than double, what else do you expect them to do? You are right in that it can't hurt his chances but it seems pretty pointless.yournamehere wrote:send in everything. 30K at Michigan is a whole lot stronger than any of your other offers. You're so in demand that Michigan (a school ranked 6 spots higher) is willing to give you money to go ... I don't see why this is even a question. There are a shit-ton of people out there who would take T14 + $, and UT has to know that.Apple Tree wrote:I have a question about the scholarship matching program. Right now I got $30k from UMich, $75K from UIUC, $81K from Alabama, and $69K ($21k scholly + in state tuition waiver) from UT. Should I send in the offer from Michigan even though the money is less than what UT gave me (if you count the instate tuition waiver)? Would it mess up my chance of getting more money?
Anyways, what's the worst they can do, turn you down?
Regarding all these scholarship matching and financial aid questions -- seriously, just call the financial aid office. If you get Ms. Alba, she might be short with you, but you'll get the answers you want (and she's actually really nice, she's just frazzled around this time of year). If you get Ms. Cannon, she's just awesome. But get the answers for yourself, and from the source.

Complete early Jamuary. Definately a non-Texan. Do you think that's why? Just feels weird to get a ding from UT and a waitlist from Columbia. Makes me scared for my cycle.Jericwithers wrote:Whoaw. Most be a non-Texan. Sorry to hear that.A Swift wrote:Dinged at UT with a 3.9/170(166).

Big scholarship in the mail today from UT just made my decision a lot tougher. Being a Sooner I could never root for a longhorn though, so it's still tough...

Re: IN AT TEXAS!!!!!!! CLASS OF 2013!!
I would think already accepting too many out-of-state applicants would be the only reason to reject you (you probably wouldn't go there either). Columbia is still hard with a 170/3.9 so you wouldn't be the only one on the waitlist with your numbers.A Swift wrote:Complete early Jamuary. Definately a non-Texan. Do you think that's why? Oklahoma has many law schools, so if that is how you feel about Texas then the border is that way ^.castellon wrote:Big scholarship in the mail today from UT just made my decision a lot tougher. Being a Sooner I could never root for a longhorn though, so it's still tough...

Haha, being surrounded by people who act like this is what makes NYU so much more appealing...Jericwithers wrote:Oklahoma has many law schools, so if that is how you feel about Texas then the border is that way ^.castellon wrote:Big scholarship in the mail today from UT just made my decision a lot tougher. Re: IN AT TEXAS!!!!!!! CLASS OF 2013!!
I had mentioned this earlier but I guess it was still early and there weren't any takers but it would be awesome for some TLS members to reserve the same hotel so we can meet eachother and go out during the evening!!Apple Tree wrote:http://www.utexas.edu/law/depts/career/ ... otels.htmlentrechatsix wrote:yeah that would be great if it's not too much trouble, i'd be interested to see what hotels they recommend.Apple Tree wrote:I emailed the admissions office asking if they provide travelling expense disbursement, and the reply was no. So I guess yeah we are on our own arranging hotels. She sent me a list of hotels near UT. I can get it up here if anybody's interested.
If anyone is interested let me know. I'm currently searching for the best hotel at the best price and closest to the law school. I can send everyone the information and hopefully meet some TLS members in the process

Ohhh were not that bad. The Law School isn't like UT undergrad, as a lot of students will be either unloyal to Longhorn dominance or indifferent to sports all together. However, as a Sooner I would lay low and keep it your dirty secret. That's actually good advice for the rest of your life .castellon wrote:Haha, being surrounded by people who act like this is what makes NYU so much more appealing...Jericwithers wrote:Oklahoma has many law schools, so if that is how you feel about Texas then the border is that way ^.castellon wrote:Big scholarship in the mail today from UT just made my decision a lot tougher. The best is how half of OU came from Texas, and they all have the same attitude, yet they GO to OU, it's weird. I went to ACL a few years ago and had a great time, but I haven't been to Austin since I turned 21. Texas wasn't in the running until today, so I think I'm going to go down and visit. I'm wearing an OU shirt at least once a week though if I wind up down there.Jericwithers wrote:Ohhh were not that bad.
