where did you hear about profs leaving due to paycuts? yeah I'm worried about the economy and UCLA too...but when I was at ASD in March the interim dean specifically brought up how this reputation-and-economy worry. I have 20k/year to Minnesota, which is my other option right now (still waiting on two schools, waitlisted at a bunch). Would it have to be a higher ranked school to be effective in attempting to get some aid?

Honestly, I didn't hear about professors leaving anywhere...that's what my dad told me. I don't know if he read it in an article or something or if he's just predicting that himself. Either way, I really need to try to show him that UCLA is a good school and has a solid reputation if I want any help from him financially and I was hoping to hear that this would be the case. haha

Is the dean calling EVERYONE who is accepted? Has anyone just got the news through snail mail or e-mail?

Well... I'll tell ya how the rejection letter was delivered when it comes in lol

Ive been complete since late Feb. Do they first run a preliminary "scan" of all files for auto rejections and auto admits? Or is it one file at a time as they come in? Or some other method?

I feel like they have not reviewed my file at all (just a hunch), since there are people who have been complete since Dec who still have not received any notice.

I got the call yesterday and I went complete in late Jan/early Feb...I'm not sure how they do it. But as far as I know, I'm one of the only people on TLS who was called yesterday, or anytime recently, which is weird to me. I thought there was usually sort of a barrage. I imagine the dean calls everyone, though.

UCLA is actually expanding the number of chaired positions due to its 100M endowment campaign. Dean Schill did a really good job of fighting hostile takeover offers of chaired professors from better schools, and I'm sure when UCLA finally gets a new Dean the focus will be on expansion of UCLA's financial and reputation status

So, what exactly goes on at the ASD? I'm assuming that, since it's a Sunday, we don't get to sit in on a class or anything and it seems to be just a cookout? I think I want to visit during the week so I can actually see a class, but just for curiosity's sake, what's planned for ASD? Also, I'm still waiting on my snail mail package to come, so does UCLA offer any kind of travel reimbursement for ASD?

Also, I'm dying to know what UCLA will rank because my dad is so sure that with the budget crisis and professor paycuts, the ranking will go down and the school is on the decline. I really need some evidence that it's not because I'm dying to go to UCLA :-\

The previous ASDs had a mock class, so you would probably get that.

Ah, I see... Is there a campus tour, as well? I actually might just do the ASD because airfare seems to be cheaper for those dates.

There wasn't a campus tour for ours, just a law school tour.

There was an optional campus tour at the first one I believe if you came early, but there is definitely one at this event, I posted the schedule in the UCLA class of 2013 thread

I applied late this cycle but UCLA is my #1 choice. I'm hoping for a miracle. Anyone else apply in December like me?

Great, thanks very much.

So I was just looking at the state residency requirements- here, under the "intent" to settle in CA section, it lists licensing for professional practice in CA. Does that mean you'd have to take the bar in CA?

What's a reasonable Cost of Attendance for UCLA?

The additional expenses are listed at $21,000/semester ($42,000/year). That would be about a total Cost of Attendance of about $87,000/year.

There must be a somewhat more reasonable way to live, right?

I was really on top of things and applied February 1st (their deadline) and was accepted last week. Maybe applying late isn't so bad after all

Pretty sure that's $21,000/year, it may be a little low for an estimate, but you can certainly achieve it under the right circumstances.

Here's the instate estimated cost(from my financial aid offer) Add 10.5k if you're out of state

UCLA LAW Cost
Tuition/Fees & Health Insurance $40,634
Books and Supplies + $1,905
Living Expenses + $19,107

Total UCLA Cost = $61,646
