Re: UCLA?
I don't know. I didn't think I would even consider Harvard before I got accepted, as I was planning on staying in Canada for school. If UCLA offered me big money it could change my outlook completely. But yeah, I probably won't be going to UCLA, especially since they didn't mention any money in the phone call....Sauer Grapes wrote:He did on mine. I'm not sure if that is always the case. I can't imagine you would not get one. Would you even consider UCLA with a Harvard acceptance?adameus wrote:got a phone call this morning from Dean Schwartz. I'm in!
Does he usually mention scholarships when he makes the phone call?
How about you? It looks like you've had a clean sweep cycle so far, do you have somewhere you are leaning towards?

Re: UCLA?
best beer?? I've been in Socal as a college kid and young professional (read: thirsty for beer) and I have no idea what you are talking about. Maybe NorCal, definitely not SoCal, unless you're a fan of cheap Mexican beers (Tecate light anyone?).Sauer Grapes wrote:Not really leaning towards anywhere yet. I'm close to deciding against Baylor though. It's tough to say no to my only full tuition so far, but I just don't think I can justify Baylor over UIUC now.
My decision really will depend a lot on $$$. WUSTL is close to home, and the other schools in the midwest are appealing as well. I like SoCal, and CA does make the best beer in the world IMO, and UVA or Duke would be an easy move since they are close by to where I currently live.
Regardless, you've got a tough decision ahead of you based on your killer cycle, so best of luck.

Re: UCLA?
The countries best beers are in NY. Saranac, Brooklyn, Ommegang, Cooperstown Brew Co., Ithaca Beer Co., Blue Point, Lake Placid Craft, Captain Lawrence, Middle Ages Brew Co...
Pretty hard to argue with that roster. The only gems in Cali I'd add to this list are Anchor, Sierra Nevada, AleSmith, and maybe Speakeasy. Stone is way overrated.
Best beer in the States though...Grand Teton Brew Co.'s Bitch Creek ESB

Re: UCLA?
If you're a hop head then Saranac, Middle Ages Brew Co, Cooperstown Brew Co, and Captain Lawrence are right up your alley. Granted CA has some good hoppy brews, but Saranac's Pale Ale and IPA are spot on. Their Octoberfest is the second best beer to grace this good earth, after Bitch Creek ESB.Sauer Grapes wrote:Have you had Russian River? That just might change your mind as I think they take care of those NY beers on your list themselves. Then again, I'm not much of a belgian style guy, so Ommegang doesn't really do much for me. I'm more of a hop head, so it's not wonder CA is where my tastes are. Of course, I've grown out of hops a bit now and am starting to appreciate the rest of the beer spectrum again.DrGuano wrote:The countries best beers are in NY. For all those admitted, and planning to visit, is there anything on March 15 other than the reception on campus?
I'll plan to schedule visits to classes, etc through the admissions office regardless, and I'm in contact with a few 1Ls there anyway. I'm a city person, so UCLA has definite appeal, but I'm not sure I can justify choosing UCLA over Michigan or Virginia.

Nothing else that I know of besides the 4 hour event. Let me know how scheduling to sit in on a class goes, and a number to call would be great too lol.saturnine wrote:For all those admitted, and planning to visit, is there anything on March 15 other than the reception on campus?

Re: UCLA?
On the invitation, they mention "watching a class." But, I have no idea what that entails. I will definitely be there on the 15th and I'm really psyched to visit.saturnine wrote:For all those admitted, and planning to visit, is there anything on March 15 other than the reception on campus?

I think both Anchor and Sierra Nevada only produce one good beer each, and the rest of them are unremarkable. Gotta love Anchor Steam on draft though.empire84 wrote:i favor magic hat over all the above.DrGuano wrote:The countries best beers are in NY. No love for Lagunitas?! Lagunitas and Dogfish Head (Delaware) are my two reliable favorites.

Re: UCLA?
I just visited the the school, and I have to say that it was an awesome experience. The campus is beautiful, the student apartments are really nice, the class I sat in on was engaging, and the students are VERY friendly. I didn't get a competitive vibe at all, and everyone seemed truly happy to be there.
Sigh...now I just have to get in.

Re: UCLA?
What do people here think about the fact that USC appears to have outperformed UCLA in placement data for 2009?
For me personally, I was on the edge between them and now I think if it comes down to it im going to SC.

I haven't heard anything, but that makes perfect sense- I didn't apply until January and I applied to the Epstein program, which seems to possibly add some time. I have similar numbers to you- good luck on hearing good news soon.empire84 wrote:anybody else have yet to hear anything since being complete? complete since mid-nov here. any guess whether this is a good or bad sign? ~168, 3.5 and hating the waiting game.
