UNT law school is set to open in 2012 with its inaugural class in downtown Dallas.FunkyJD wrote:Man. I just wonder if we need more law schools. I would rather the cash have gone towards boosting UT-Arlington or another Texas school up to tier-one research university status; or shoring up the University of Houston Law Center so the poor kids down there don't have to pay higher tuition.UTL_plz wrote:I believe i read an article recently saying that UNT would soon roll out with a law school. It seems like it would cost a bit more than $5 million in start-up funds to get a decent law school up and running. This is 5th tier all the way.squ1rtle wrote:UNT law school is set to open in 2012 with its inaugural class in downtown Dallas.FunkyJD wrote:Man. I just wonder if we need more law schools. Yes. We're all going to change our minds about going to the second highest ranked school in Texas because a "disillusioned" codpiece conducted an internet search for SMU grads in three BigLaw firms in Texas. We all trust your five percent estimate...even more than we trust the NLJ and their placement rankings. There's more words in your post than numbers. Reverse that and then maybe we can have a substantive conversation.Fyre182 wrote:why do people believe that more than 5% of SMU will actually have BIGLAW salaries? Or, anyone other than the top 5% will ever be employed at one of the BIGLAW firms in texas V&E, Baker Botts, L&W etc.
why are people suggesting that SMU will place better than UT-- even in Dallas?
I am disillusioned
A simple search on V & E's page will show the huge disparity between the two schools.

Note that almost all of the SMU grads working for V&E are coif (meaning top 5% grads), many are LR presidents etc. We are talking roughly 5-10 students a year that will ever have a shot.
Notice that the UT list is almost half Partners. Notice that the disparity is 210 to 30. The disparity is even larger at other firms, check them yourself.
I repeat, I am disillusioned
I have also considered that the search may find undergraduate institutions. This was fruitless, every single person I clicked on from UT was a UT Law grad.

I'm up for making one. It'd help if several of you come on as admins since there's already a 2013 group (but it was made last year by evening program students--at least it appears so).cafloyd12 wrote: Now that that's out of the way, anybody more social networking savvy than me want to create an SMU Law 2013/2014 facebook page?

Haha - I was in this tour group! She was really..energetic!kalvano wrote:fathergoose wrote:I noticed this. Any theories why that was the case? the girl/guy ratio was a bit skewed haha... i felt like there were only seven or so gals there
On a serious note, I really did enjoy the asd. I think unless something changes I'll be there in the fall.
I was really curious who the TLSers were. Did any of y'all have breakfast on the slanted round table? Or have the tour with the petite feisty 2L with the enormous engagement ring? Or each lunch with the spaced out PT student who transfered from Georgetown?
I was on a tour led by the girl whose list of activities made me feel like an utter failure just being around her. The 3L that graduated with a double major in math and physics or something like that. She will be the first female President. Very nice and friendly, though.
I ate breakfast in one of the easy chair directly in front of the little buffet, close to the coffee maker. For anyone that noticed me, HI!! And sorry if I said anything rude, it was a long drive down.

I'm currently trying to make the same decision as well. Although more me its more like $SMU and sticker for WUSTL. Anyway, ASD was really good, I had originally toured the place with just a tour guide and two other people and was not very impressed but this second time around gave me a much better feeling about the campus.HBK wrote:I couldn't make it to the ASD, but visited the campus a while ago- and wasn't all that impressed overall. It sounds like the people who went to the ASD really liked it. To the people who attended the ASD- what did you like? What didn't you like? Did they provide a really compelling pitch? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently debating between $$ SMU and $ WUSTL.
I think the campus is nice. However, if I can secure a high-paying job in the strong Dallas legal market as a result of attending SMU, I don't care if they hold class outside in the elements.HBK wrote:I couldn't make it to the ASD, but visited the campus a while ago- and wasn't all that impressed overall. These are exactly my sentiments.utcris410 wrote:The law school quad is pretty. I haven't visited many other law schools, but I enjoy the greenery and the set up. I also enjoy the weather, the city and the proximity to my current life that SMU provides. That's not the most important thing to me, however. For me, I know I could live in Dallas and love it because I currently live here. SMU is a great option for me if I want to stay in Dallas. Also, the staff has been very helpful every step along the way.
