Got in almost two weeks ago....does anybody know how good Columbia is with financial aid? I'm afraid they might dole out all of their money before I get anything.

AFAIK, only the named scholly's have gone out so far. Other aid goes out begining at the end of the month - not sure how generous they are with $$ though.

Anyone know a more precise date for the aid? NYU's enrollment deadline to get aid is 4/2, which is incredibly catty of them.

judging from last year, people started getting aid in the mail on 4/3. :?

I love NYU, but this is ridiculous.

Okay, sleazy all around on NYU's part. Despite getting a fairly decent chunk of money from them, I think this actually pushed me towards Columbia. Nice job, NYU. If they'd given me more money, I would have been happy despite the manipulating, but a small scholarship and this shenanigans just make me angry.

Is April 2nd the enrollment deadline for those who received merit aid (i.e. Dean's scholarship)? I imagine it's not the deadline for those receiving purely need-based aid.

Does Columbia grant need based (if applicable) financial aid in addition to merit based scholarships? I got my NYU aid info today and it looks like they bundle everything in with the Dean's scholy.

Did you fill out all the FINAID stuff for them? And send your/your parents tax returns? It was due March 1st or ASAP after acceptance. I am scrambling to get it all in this week. Just got in yesterday.

I sent in my Fafsa, etc. a long time ago. Good luck with putting your finaid info, together!

as far as i can tell from lsn, last year pretty much every applicant who received money from nyu and was also admitted to columbia got money from columbia. often more and always in the same ballpark. it seems pretty rare that someone gets a dean's scholarship at nyu and nothing from cls.

I applied in December. Columbia was not a stretch school, it was like as if I had higher chances of winning the lotto than getting accepted. I tried anyway. Since then....they have lost 4-5 pieces of my paperwork over and over. I was on vacation and they lost one of my electronic attachments so I had my boyfriend email it to them and then they said they lost it again (accidentally deleted the email).
They lost a letter from the dean of my undergrad (I have a special circumstance).

I knew it wasn't very likely but now I am more annoyed. They emailed me today saying that my file will be complete by this evening. 4 months to complete.

Sorry I was just ranting. I wonder when I will get my rejection? :P

At least in theory, though, Columbia's aid is need-based. I'm very unlikely to qualify for need-based aid (my parents think otherwise, as their income has dropped substantially since I last applied for financial aid at college, but they still have solid incomes, and I have no student debt, so I disagree), and I'm worried that Columbia is not going to give me anything even though I almost certainly would qualify for merit aid if they just called it that.

Although I like NYU and had previously placed it above Columbia, Columbia has been winning me over of late. But I don't know if I can throw away my NYU scholarship and gamble that I'll get one from Columbia. And I really don't want to throw $500 away on enrollment fees at NYU while waiting for Columbia's aid. And I think Columbia might get annoyed by me enrolling at NYU while not withdrawing from them; they're really testy about enrollment, it seems.

If I have not received a Columbia FinAid decision by the end of March, I'm thinking I will call Columbia, tell them that I am depositing at NYU but would be lured away by a substantial scholarship offer (and not to consider my deposit at NYU a commitment not to attend Columbia), and then deposit at NYU. But I don't know how they would react, and that $500 deposit fee looks really painful :|

Now would be a good time to let me in, HYS.

well yea, emailing columbia with nyu offers during march seems to be standard practice. i too wouldn't qualify at all on purely need-based grounds; however, as I said it seems pretty much everyone getting nyu awards also receives something similar from columbia so clearly cls is giving awards to people who wouldn't qualify for aid.

I figure I should send the NYU offer to Columbia soon. I assume you're doing the same. Are you sending it to FinAid, admissions, or both?

Yea, I'm going to send the nyu offer (damn pdf is password protected so I can't even copy from it, have to print it and scan it to make a new pdf). I'm not sure yet about who to email etc and what to say; I'm going to look around the site to see what people did in previous years. I'll let you know.

Edited to remove unfunny joke.

Who is going to the April ASW? Funny how those scholarship offers are to be responded to 3 days before it. I didn't get one, so I guess I can take more time. :|

Yea, if Columbia Finaid doesn't get back to me before NYU, I will forget about NYU. I'm not going to let this little power-play of theirs achieve its desired results. No sense in rewarding these kinds of tactics.

Also, the above posts reminded me.

Would it be smart to send NYU's Dean Scholly information to Columbia now?

It won't let you print a PDF to a PDF, though. Or else I'm missing something. But Print to PDF is greyed out for the file. How did you do it, Benito?
