Re: Columbia 2010
I think there were a few serious lurking variables that made Cornell go up by half while other schools are probably going up by more like 20%. Those two main variables are that Cornell is in a cold, remote location and that it requires a dean statement. Both of these things probably make Cornell get fewer applications during normal years, with a larger portion of the people applying being serious about Cornell. In a year like this, people are applying to more schools so I think a lot of people who would have applied to some T14's, but left out annoying Cornell, are going to the trouble to apply there this year to be safer.

Cornell dropped the Dean's Statement requirement this year. Which might explain part of the jump in apps, actually.

Re: Columbia 2010
Also, Cornell has lay prestige that comes with its name (but at the same time isn't overwhelmingly intimidating like H or Y), so it may have drawn a greater number of casual applicants than other T14 schools without the same kind of lay prestige/approachability combo, which contributed to the spike in apps.CoaltoNewCastle wrote:I think there were a few serious lurking variables that made Cornell go up by half while other schools are probably going up by more like 20%. Anyway, why are we talking about Cornell in the Columbia thread? Let's get worrying here, folks, not talking about some TTT in upstate

Because Columbia has ignored us for so long, they've left us no choice other than to discuss completely unrelated topics in their thread.BenJ wrote:Anyway, why are we talking about Cornell in the Columbia thread? Let's get worrying here, folks, not talking about some TTT in upstate

True. Cornell really dropped the dean's statement requirement? Geez, I didn't know that. But that really helps explain why they have so many more applicants.

It's still required, but only if you have a black mark on your app.CoaltoNewCastle wrote:Cornell really dropped the dean's statement requirement? Geez, I didn't know that. But that really helps explain why they have so many more applicants.

Because I didn't post on TLS very often until my application anxiety reached a fever pitch. I knew people here would commiserate.managamy wrote:The more I hear from you, the more I like you. Will that help my chances? So when should I expect my decision from Columbia. Has there been a wave of early application wl/rejects yet?

How long did it take you to kill that goat by staring at it? Take that time and add three to four months to it, and that's how long it will take CLS to get back to you.Jericwithers wrote:Will that help my chances? And every day that passes without my CLS acceptance, I feel like Bogie on the train platform with a comical look on his face because his insides have been kicked out.

Hopefully, you'll eventually feel the way he does in "Key Largo" when he's gunned down Edward G. Robinson & Co. and is heading back to an adoring Bacall.blue5385 wrote:managamy wrote:Blue5385, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.blue5385 wrote:

I hope so. CLS should enter the 21st century and get a Twitter feed, that way I could obsessively follow it to gauge when decisions are coming out instead of stalking other applicants on LSN to determine their complete/decision dates. It would be much less effort without sacrificing any of the neuroticism.managamy wrote:Hopefully, you'll eventually feel the way he does in "Key Largo" when he's gunned down Edward G. Only YLS, Berkeley, and Chicago have a Twitter feed among the top schools.blue5385 wrote:I hope so. Maybe that's why Chicago has been so deathly slow--they're spending a disproportionate amount of time updating their Twitter feed instead of making decisions on apps.managamy wrote:Only YLS, Berkeley, and Chicago have a Twitter feed among the top schools.blue5385 wrote:I hope so. I guess it depends on your definition of "top," but Northwestern has an active Twitter feed.managamy wrote:Only YLS, Berkeley, and Chicago have a Twitter feed among the top schools.blue5385 wrote:I hope so. Northwestern is different. It is a top school, but it's totally irrelevant to anyone applying straight from undergrad. Your numbers and application either aren't good enough to make up for the lack of work experience, or they are good enough to make up for it but they're also good enough to get you into Chicago.Dignan wrote:I guess it depends on your definition of "top," but Northwestern has an active Twitter feed.managamy wrote:Only YLS, Berkeley, and Chicago have a Twitter feed among the top schools.blue5385 wrote:I hope so. Re: Columbia 2010
I wish people would stop saying things like this. Northwestern isn't THAT into work experience. They could just as easily be said to be really into the LSAT. They're just a splitter-friendly school. My friend got into Northwestern right out of undergrad with a ~2.9 (I think, but it might have been lower), 175. TLS users have blown the NW=work experience idea out of proportion.BenJ wrote: Northwestern is different. It is a top school, but it's totally irrelevant to anyone applying straight from undergrad. Edit: After reading more about this in the splitters thread, it looks like I'm wrong now because of a very recent policy change on their part. Sorry.
