I'm in at NYU, WL at Cornell. Seems a bit weird given the rankings. I don't really care about Cornell anymore now , but I'm still curious: did Cornell sorta turn me down to protect their stats?

No. This "YP" stuff is nonsense. You simply did not convince Cornell that you (1) deserve to and (2) want to attend.

Unlikely.

Not necessarily, especially since Cornell has been much stingier with numbers this cycle.

I think we talk a lot about YP, and it isn't about YP. I think it's about acceptance rate. I don't think Cornell wants to increase it's acceptance rate by accepting people like yourself who will get into and probably attend higher ranked schools that aren't in the middle of nowhere. And I say this as someone who was also accepted to NYU but WL at Cornell. It seems that Cornell is more self-selective than other top schools, and Cornell can probably spot folks like myself who would probably enjoy spending 3 years in a larger city than Ithaca.

You just described the rationale behind YP, which is to drive down acceptance rates (fewer acceptances needed to fill X seats).

If Cornell's analysis was that I was unlikely to accept, they're not wrong. Also, I kinda half-assed my application (sent them my generic stuff and did the videos without much prep, but well dressed), so there's that too. If they picked on that vibe, they were right to WL me.

That being said, turning someone down because he/she doesn't care about the school is not YP. That's just being a good adcom. Turning someone down because you wouldn't mind him/her coming but they are unlikely to do so, that is YP. As soon as you're factoring in acceptance probability, it's some version of YP methinks.
