Nothing could be more cold or compel more people to paranoia than JS1/Held/In Review/etc statuses, many of which aren't even updated in tandem with what's going on internally. The reason people like us become addicted to actually checking them is because acceptances are oftentimes reflected faster on the status checker before an adcom even calls. If I remember correctly, UC Irvine and Yale are the only schools to do away with the status checker. My props to them for recognizing a bad system when they see it.
