I'm not sure if you are spiritual or have a religious faith, I don't get the vibes that you're traditionally religious (altho I've made false assumptions about you before heh?)

why do you want to help people?

(I ask because I also want to do PI and help people and lately I am really trying to figure out why that is, given my wavering spiritual/religious beliefs)

ETA I know it's a very complicated and atheists and agnostics and everybody and anybody can have ethics/morals/blah blah disclaimer.

Meh. I think happiness is subjective and can be achieved outside of the job if you pay enough attn to yourself/your needs. But, I'm also someone who's grown up with a mood disorder so I'm probably more attentive when it comes to that kind of stuff than your avg. person. But I think to say "helping people who need help" can be unfulfilling is a little weird lol. He made the "It's not a fulfilling job" argument, you're making the "It's a stressful job" argument. I, personally, find helping people who need help to be extremely fulfilling and, in turn, that makes me happier. Again, it's about perspective. We'll all figure it out soon enough

I believe it. Something you have to accept in most professions. I'm close to 7 years out of ugrad and have learned the "career ennui" as meer called it back on the waiters thread is pervasive af, no matter where you are.

That's true. Job market is better but still not great. Cost of living is increasing faster than salaries are.

society needs some people to take on the high-skill low-paid jobs
EMT is a low-skill job - I don't mean that it's not hard, I mean that it doesn't require +7yrs. school and $$$.
i have the social mobility to take on a mountain of debt and reasonably deal with it

Going off of your disclaimer, I don't really think the desire to help others comes from a religious standpoint as often as it does from a moral one, or perhaps even just knowledge that there are injustices being done and that you have potential to stop some of them. That's part of my interest in it. The other part of it is I don't know enough black lawyers But no, seriously, the justice system has such a huge impact on black communities and yet, there's not a substantial number of black lawyers, judges, etc. I think it's easier for me to be part of a change I want to see rather than just saying "HEY! WE NEED MORE BLACK LAWYERS AND JUDGES! WE NEED REPRESENTATION THAT LOOKS LIKE US!" and I'm all about the idea that black children need to have representation in all career fields so that they know that they are just as able as their white counterparts to hold those positions.
