Got waitlisted by email today. I'm half surprised and half not because I thought I would get in with my stats but they were taking a very long time to make a decision. I'm not very impressed so far by University of Washington so I'm most likely going to withdraw. Good luck to everyone else

I feel considering their ranking and employment numbers, they're a little more picky than they should be. But that may just be me.pingu_boki wrote:Got waitlisted by email today. Is anyone planning on attending the admitted student's events?

Between that and making everyone wait until March 15 for scholarship numbers, I'm inclined to agree. Maybe it's working out for them though? They are in a desirable city for a lot of people.heyimliz wrote:I feel considering their ranking and employment numbers, they're a little more picky than they should be. Interesting. I didn't think that UW did that, but hopefully it's a good thing!december1205 wrote:Oh sorry for not being clear. They emailed me saying they want to interview me. I applied because I really wanted to live in Washington but the employment prospects sorta scared me off haha. The Seattle market seems to be notorious for its job scarcity. I was also not too impressed with having to apply for merit scholarships. I would have loved to live in Seattle though!CJRpnw wrote:Between that and making everyone wait until March 15 for scholarship numbers, I'm inclined to agree. Maybe it's working out for them though? How active are the student organizations at the law school? And, are there any in particular that you would recommend joining?mcmand wrote:UW Law 2L lurking here. HMU with questions, if you have any. I'm an open book. Can't help you get in but can help you know if it's right for you.

Hello to everyone! First and foremost, congratulations on all the acceptances. I'm new to the site and applied to UW about a week ago. I live in the Seattle area and UW is the school I want to attend.
Generally, how long does process to reach a decision take?
Do they review URMs at a faster/slower rate?
Are they favorable to UW undergrads?
Thanks in advance for all of the help!

Good luck! For me, the process took just over a month to find out. Now that they're reviewing more apps later in the season it might be longer. On URMs, I doubt there is a speed difference, but who knows. They seem favorable towards people whom they think are likely to attend if accepted - since you're from Seattle you probably fit in that category. But generally I doubt that makes more than a slight difference if your stats and experience are good.dmgnwk wrote:Hello to everyone! First and foremost, congratulations on all the acceptances. That's great to hear. Thanks so much for the in-depth response! I'm just wondering about one more point. Has joining multiple organizations proven to be a major time commitment? And, based on your experiences, how did you juggle 1L work with organization membership (i.e. meetings, etc)?mcmand wrote:Very active. I think that really depends on your interests, because there's enough variety to cover a broad spectrum of interests. I'm involved in American Constitution Society, Outlaws, and Minority Law Students Association. There are also a lot of subject-specific orgs (Tech Law Society, Tax Law Association, Law & Business Association, Public Interest Law Association, Association of Prosecutors and Defenders, International Law Society, and many others.) There are also opportunities to work on issues around social justice in the law school and the Seattle area, either through the law school's Diversity Committee or through other student groups, such as LSWAIR (Law students working against institutional racism).gastronomy wrote:How active are the student organizations at the law school? I haven't covered every organization, there should be a better list on the admissions website. Feel free to ask me more specific questions on here or privately.

Re: University of Washington School of Law c/o 2019 Applicants (2015-2016)
I've definitely heard other people mention the "number of orgs. to join" rule, and that made me worry about time commitments. Really appreciate reading your perspective. I'll ask around and figure out a schedule that works for me rather than relying on general "rules," haha. Thanks again for all your advice!mcmand wrote:It depends on the level of commitment I am giving to an organization. I have more responsibilities in some organizations than in others. The thing to keep in mind is that everyone is a law student in these orgs, so it's not like you're the only one who is busy, and in all likelihood you're not going to be given mounds of stuff to do. Rather, you will have a few events or projects throughout the year that gradually build up and then taper off in terms of time commitment.gastronomy wrote:That's great to hear. It's quite manageable, as long as you're being honest with yourself about your free time. Don't do stuff you're not interested in or it will feel like a chore.
One thing I noticed in comparing my questions as a 0L to now is the oft-repeated question about time commitments to student organizations, and the various rules people come up with ("only do one!" "no more than two!" "don't do any!"). The reality is, you'll need to talk about something other than class in your job interviews, and if you have specific interests or passions, you'll want them to jump out on your resume. Plus, many student organizations partner with outside organizations and bring lawyers into the school for networking. You're shooting yourself in the foot by not being involved. Tl;dr - get involved if you want to, or don't. Don't limit yourself if you don't want to limit yourself. Do what matters to you. It's your time and money and no one else's.
