Didn't see one of these, so I figured I'd get it started. Sent in app last week. Based on past years, may be some time before decisions come out. Anybody heard anything/applying?

how are the job prospects looking? I know UNC is sort of known for punching way above its ranking weight.

I would say that UNC definitely places better than its ranking, but a lot of that is because of the strong alumni network that UNC has. UNC is a regional school, and places very well in NC, SC, VA, TN. However, I have friends that have landed summer associate positions at V20 firms in NY (they aren't 1Ls). UNC also has a really great career development office that works their butts off to get students into jobs. Long story short, if you're okay staying regional, UNC is fantastic. If you've got to have NY/DC, it's possible, but not the norm at all.

well I am going JAG after law school so immediately its not a huge issue but long term Id prefer DC. Thanks though! Im definitely applying and kind of excited at the possibility of catching some good bball.

Thanks for the Q/A! Do you know what ranking or percentage it would take to land some of the larger Charlotte/Raleigh firms from UNC?

Also I guess this is to anyone who may know/have an idea, my app went complete a few weeks ago, but after I sent everything in I decided to retake the LSAT bc my preptest average was several points higher. UNC reverted my file to incomplete bc of the pending retake. Is it going to be a severe disadvantage for admittance/scholly money if I go back to complete in early January? Current numbers are 164/3.5x if that helps. UNC is my number one so I don't wanna jeapardize anything

Well your current LSAT is above the 75 and your gpa is at the median so you're guaranteed entry probably with scholarship too.

My estimate is that it would take probably top 25-30% to land the larger Charlotte/Raleigh firms. The top 10% typically go to DC (some to NY) and surprising, Dallas. I don't know why, but UNC places very well in Dallas. Many of these firms value UNC over other schools in part because UNC students/alumni tend to stay local which is something the NC firms appreciate. Also, going complete in January won't affect your chance at getting in or scholarship money. One thing to note though, UNC doesn't negotiate scholarships. As they'll adamantly tell you. Associate with moderate interaction with recruiting activity at a large regional or biglaw firm with offices in Charlotte/Raleigh here. I can't speak to other firms in either city, but I don't think I have heard of us interviewing anyone outside of the top 10 or so students at UNC and Wake. I also think that we don't prefer UNC or Wake over one another.

ETA: I can't answer specific questions about UNC, because I did not attend there. Don't ask why I was in the UNC thread, I honestly don't know.

Living is extremely easy. There are a lot of different apartment areas and lots of rentals around the school. The buses are free and make like pretty convenient. There's good food and good shopping and a lot to do for the most part. I'm not from here and I've really enjoyed living here - its beautiful and everyone is pretty active. If you're more curious about something specific, like costs, just let me know.

Jumping in to say JAG is pretty hard to get and counting on "going JAG" isn't a safe bet.

No, I am not a JAG, I am a 1L. But IIRC from the info session it was about 4-5% of applicants each year who get JAG.

Than why are you talking to me? I know the acceptance rate for JAG and that most people who apply are just looking for a freebie job, their quite good at separating those from the people who actually want to serve.

I did, because I went to an LSAC forum and they sent one out to all those who left their e-mail with them.

In-state tuition is easily attainable if you do everything correctly. Although doing everything correctly can be tricky. You have to completely break ties with any state that is not North Carolina, be completely independent from another individual, and reside (with a valid license, voter registration, paying taxes, and preferably with registered property such as a vehicle) for exactly twelve months before they will grant in-state tuition. However, there is no limit to how many times you can apply. You could apply each semester until it is granted.

The downside is if you move to North Carolina, say in August before classes begin, you can't leave the state to work your during your 1L summer because you have to continuously reside in NC for twelve months.
