Is a campus visit sufficient to avoid being YP'ed if you are pretty far above both the GPA and LSAT 75th's?

that plus a why UVA will really help, but it's not necessarily a guarantee of course

Does anyone know if in-state residents get a noticeable boost in UVA admissions/scholarships/YP/anything?

I've heard that the bump is sizeable, but I'll admit that I don't remember where I heard this nor do I have any data to back it up. So, just spreading rumors really.

I believe UVA has to take 60% Virginia residents for each class.

checking in! Unfortunately I won't get a chance to visit the school before applying...any thoughts from people who have visited, particularly in comparison to other schools?

(Also noob question: What does YP mean and what is the implication?)

Actually, 40% is reserved for Virginia residents.
What percentage of the class are in-state students, and is preference given to Virginia residents?
As a public law school, 40 percent of the places in our student body are historically reserved for residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Haven't visited, but it looks beautiful. You can read/see a bit of Charlottesville on their website. IMO, pretty cool to live in a university town, would be a first for me.

YP = yield protection; basically if your stats are above or quite a bit above a school's 75 percentiles, they could waitlist or reject you to protect their yield rate (which is used in USNews ranking calculations) since they think you will pick a "better" school anyway. I fear YP :(

^Interesting. Any idea if past experience has shown that, if applicants don't write a why UVA essay/visit campus, strong numbers are not sufficient to merit an acceptance? Even if applied early in the cycle?

Okay yeah, I knew the 40/60 percent thing played out somehow!

It's really hard to say, other than anecdotally, given that most people won't report that they wrote a "Why X Law School" essay on LSN or our TLS spreadsheets. Anecdotally, people have reported writing the extra essay to help. If you browse some nice numbers on LSN, you can definitely see evidence of yield protection though, including at UVA.

Well...why not? I'll suggest xylo add a column if she has time in the other thread.
