As I posted on the CA thread, I won't be joining you guys next year at Davis. I still look forward to meeting you all in August, though. Who knows, maybe I'll transfer!

Don't be mad at Davis. I can totally see why my flaky life made me look like a bad bet for them - especially this year. I am getting excited about McGeorge!

Awwww AZ I am BUMMED. I am more than bummed. That really sucks - but I think you will be great at McGeorge and there is of course the possibility of transferring. And the great news is that you are still close so we can still meet and hang and meet your babes and pick vegetables. But we will miss you. What a poor mistake on their part.

gtr, it's in Sac.

tmo, don't be bummed! I'm sort of hopeful that I'll be able to kick butt there. Funny thing, the couple times I've been at the law school at Davis I didn't really feel at home. I'm spooky like that, I guess, so my subconscious at least was prepared for this. Even before I found out I was rejected, I was feeling better and better about McGeorge - so many folks in the area have good things to say about it. Since I'm staying here, why waste a portable degree on me? I even found some people saying nice things about UoP (along with McJD jokes, of course) on JD Underground, so there you go. For government work, it may actually give me better prospects due to the strong ties it has there.

I am feeling literally 100X better today than I was while I was waiting. I can't wait to meet all of you UCD students - and Stuffed Burrito may be headed to McGeorge (plus chalyse) so I won't be lonely.

Az, I am sorry to hear that you will not be with us at Davis in the Fall. Even though I have never actually met you, I can say that law school will not be the same without you. I know that it is disappointing that the admissions committee at Davis had a complete lapse in judgement, but at least you have a strong back up in McGeorge. While it is not your first choice, law school is ultimately what you make of it, and I have full confidence that you will do extremely well and get the job you want when you are done. You seem like a remarkable person, and I hope to have the opportunity to meet you (along with everyone else in this thread) during the Summer. Best of luck and take care.

Thanks for posting about the SF admitted students thing TMO. I've been out of town adn just catching up, but how was the breakdown in terms of younger and older accepted students, out of curiosity? What was the total turnout like?

Azo - I just posted in the CA thread, but I"m sorry again to hear about Davis :( I'm glad to hear you're getting excited about McGeorge!!! It's a great place and you'll be w/ stuffedburrito!

Hey IHS - I can't really say what the official breakout was because I mostly talked to alumni and professors, but the handful of admitted students I met were very young. Either just finishing up undergrad or a year or two out. I look quite young too and had a couple of people look at me and be like "Oh, I've been out of school and working for a year, but good for you for going straight through!". I guess I'll have to get used to that. It really seemed to be more of an alumni event with just a few admitted students actually. That or I was just on the wrong end of the room.

So, hows everyone's apartment searches going? I've been checking craigslist and there seems to always be something open. I got into the campus housing so I'm pretty stoked about that (supper cheap rent). My only concern was that there was no Washer or Dryer hookups and I really dont want to go to the laundry mat. Then I found these washer/dryer all in one deals that are "ventless" meaning they dry clothes in using condensation (no hot air coming out of the back). From what I've read they take about 3-4 hours to go from wash to dry, but they are supper energy efficient... anyone ever had one?

Hey oopivyoo, congrats on campus housing - you really can't beat the price in or around Davis. Is it Russel park? Anyway, are you thinking about buying the washer/dryer thing? I *believe* I had one of these in Europe - they take forever and the dryer part still is a bit lacking, I needed a stand to finish most things up. That said, I just got used to it. Nowhere near as convenient as the regular machines, but after a couple of months it's just normal really. If you are fairly low maintenance, I would imagine it would be fine.

I am pretty sure that I will be moving to the Natomas area because there is an abundance of new houses for rent that are not very expensive (comparable to what I would pay for an apartment in Davis). It seems to be about a 20 minute commute to campus, which is fine by me (I have had much worse in the past). It is highly like that my SO will work in Sacramento, so one of us will have to commute no matter where we move. I will start looking for a specific place in about a month, and I plan on moving in July.

congrats on the campus housing, oopivy! can I ask you when your movein date is and how you found out?

I sent in the request form, but I'm a bit uncertain about when I find out if I can actually get in. The way they explained it, it seems like a crapshoot for Aug. Maybe not though!

matt - i've been seeing a lot of nice places for Natomas on Craigslist. good for you!

I'd say there is not an area where most grad students live, though we have a lot in East and Central Davis. I personally would not choose to live in South Davis, because it it over the highway and a somewhat long and uncharacteristically unfriendly bike ride to campus. West Davis is sort of boring but can be very close to school, depending. It's such a small town that you're not really talking about huge distances/differences. It's more about finding the right complex/house.

Thanks, I signed up for the waitlist back in Jan/Feb, and then called to see which summer month had the smallest waitlist. They said it was going to be in June, so I ended up being #3 on that waitlist. The priority is, students with childre, married students, single graduate students, undergraduate students. I found out via e-mail, but Ive been calling on a monthly basis to make sure my paperwork was still alright and to remind them that I really wanted a place. If your on the Aug waitlist you will probobly hear by the end of June/beg. of July if its a Yes. If your on the waitlist make sure you call them and tell them your a law student or else you wont get one because you wont be registered for classes when the places open up.
TMO, I got into Solano Park, not Russell park.
Pros: its like right down the street from the law school (maybe 300 feet if that), Its right across the street from downtown, its right next to the little river that runs through campus, there are gardening plots to rent, its cheap, from what I hear the free internet on campus housing is the fastest in the state, and its all grad students.
Cons: the train rolls right by it (this is a big con actually becuase I hear they blow their horns right down the street), its old, Ive heard rummors that there is no beer alowed (although I dont see this on the web site).

Thanks for the tip, oopivy. I"ll give them a call. It looks like they just cashed my app. check today, so we'll see. I'm a little nervous bc you don't actually get to see the interior of the places before you sign on (or at least I didn't have a chance to take a tour when in Davis), but for that price, I really can't complain.

Yeah, you cant really see the insides. Think of it this way though, you will get about a 400-500 dollar savings per month which equals 18K over three years. Thats 18 thousand dollars you wont have to pay back in loans. In my book thats as good as a scholarship, and if I was told I would get an 18k scholarship only if I lived in an old apartment I'd say O.K. From what I hear there are lenolium floors throughout. I have hardwood floors right now, so I have enough rugs to cover the lenolium, but I think just the fact that there are lenolium floors in every room says something about the rest of the apartment! :D

Yeah it's too far.

Lots of people do the commute - you have to go along the highway 80 over the causeway - it's probably about 10 miles each way. It's definitely doable, but be prepared to have a backup if it's raining and you don't want to ride. There is the yolobus that goes from w. sac to davis, but it can be a pain in the but.

Honestly, it's probably best to live in Davis, and ride your bike for fun. There are loads of country roads all around to ride on, and loads of groups that go out for rides all the time.

i am riding in the tour de cure (http://tour.diabetes.org) in 2 weeks, which is about 50k (~36miles)

which isnt an amazing distance on a bike of course, but still a good workout that i have to train for

yeah, 10 miles isnt bad at all, & 20 miles a day would give me all the daily exercise i would need

my only concern would be missing out on the 'davis atmosphere' (whatever that is) by commuting to/from sacramento. from the admitted students event day i did last month, all the quiet roads seem awesome for just biking around. & of course i would love to be able to support the local businesses on a daily business

gtr,

From what I little I know about you, I have a feeling you would be happier in Davis. My biggest personal bummer about not getting into UCD is having to commute - I-80 can be a bitch. Midtown is nice, though, and there's better nightlife in Sac. I know people who commute by bike. It's doable, but I say live in Davis for 1L if you can.

cool, thanks for the responses guys

yeah, ive been looking @ housing for davis in the past few days. got a few decent leads, nothing solid... its kind of hard to secure housing being on the other side of the country. :x

i think im ready to try out the small town atmosphere of davis & yeah, its reassuring to know sac is only ~10 miles away if i need a more urban setting
