It's not you it's me...

I hope this is the right forum to ask, what is the correct way to decline an offer of admission? Email, letter, messenger pigeon?

In all seriousness though, no need to burn bridges. What's the best plan?

Most schools have a form (either online or included in your admissions package) where you accept their offer. On this same form there is usually a check box to decline the offer and (sometimes) a line to write your plans given that you are turning them down.

Alternatively, an email is fine. They're used to it.

Yeah, email is definitely fine. I turned down a T-25 last year via email. I got into the same school this cycle with $$ coming through.

Some safety schools are out, turns out I miss-judged my application strength.

Looking at your stats, I could see why you thought that. Yeah, makes sense.

So when a top 30 gave me 30k a year I basically decided my lower safeties were pointless.

Yeah. I would just email them. It's a hassle to have to send the letters and shit through the post office.

Yeah, make it polite, but you don't need to get all flowery or verbose like you're resigning from a job you've held for years. Just "Thank you for your offer of admission. However, I've decided to enroll elsewhere next year. I appreciate all your help during the application process. Respectfully, X."
