Hello! I'm not applying to Wyo, but I am a native Wyomingite and currently finishing up my undergrad in Laramie. If you have any questions about the area or school, I'd be willing to answer them! Good luck!

Laramie can be an interesting combination of the two, from my perspective. For example, if you hang around and work on campus a bunch, attend University functions, shop at Walmart, frequent the bars only after 10pm on weekends and during happy hour, you're mostly going to see college students. Sometimes, I forget that Laramie is actually in Wyoming because I do all of these things. However, if you spend any time downtown working or shopping, go to bars during off-hours, or generally spend time in the community, you are going to interact with a different, more typical Wyoming crowd.

Personally, Laramie isn't my favorite area in Wyoming. However, I'm biased since I grew up in a much prettier part of the state, close to the mountains. Laramie does have a few things going for it, and it is not as crappy as some places in Wyo (like Kemmerer, Rock Springs, Rawlins, etc). Low rent, friendly atmosphere, fun bar scene, and lots of outdoorsy stuff to do. Also, pretty close to Fort Collins and Denver. Overall, I think it's a good place to go to college.

For recreation, Vedauwoo is really popular for hiking, climbing, camping, bonfires, nordic skiing etc. And it's only ten miles east of town on I-80. You can also go west towards Saratoga and Medicine Bow Natl Forest. I know there are some lakes in that direction, but I've never looked around for those. Snowy Range is really popular for skiing/snowboarding and I think you can get really good deals on passes through UW.

As for where to live, you're safe just about anywhere in Laramie. Except for West Laramie- that's the sketchy part of town, across from the railroad tracks. If you want to live by yourself, there are some pretty sweet studios in a place called the Connor Hotel in downtown for cheap, but they're a ways away from campus. The law building is on the far east side of campus, and if you want to walk to class you should keep that in mind when looking for a place. I can give you more specifics if you are really interested, but overall finding a place to live here is easy. And cheap! I haven't paid over $350/month for the last 3 years, but I live with a roommate. You can expect $400-$600 w/o roommates.

I really enjoy the nightlife here. The bar scene can be a lot of fun. There are 7-8 bars right in the downtown area, within walking distance of each other (a few blocks) and that's really nice. Laramie and the University are small enough that you're going to run into someone you know just about anywhere you decide to go. Each bar has its own atmosphere and crowd of regulars... Front Street and Crowbar usually have lots of hipsters, the Cowboy is (surprise) frequented by hicks and has a big dance floor for swing dancing, and every so often the Ranger is overrun by gays (holler). But once I have a few beers, it's all the same to me!

Lastly, I have to admit I don't know much about job prospects. I didn't do any research on the law school here, since I knew I wasn't applying. I would assume, though, that a large portion of graduates stay in the Mountain West region generally. When I did my interview for Vandy, I went to a big firm in Denver and the guy said he worked with someone from UW, so I think Denver is an option.

Well... Law school app fail. They just reminded me to pay their fee. Totally forgot because all the other schools let me pay via the LSAC website.

You should! You could probably get a feel for the place from visiting. I'll also say the campus is really nice here. Lots of grass and trees, and generally very pretty. The law building is nice- I've been in there a few times to do research in the library. It's isolated from the rest of campus, except for the Fine Arts building, so your interactions with undergrads are minimized. The library seems like a good place to study.

I'll just say that Laramie isn't for everyone. It's definitely a small town and can feel very small when there's not a whole lot going on. It is pretty conservative outside the university environment. The winters can be brutal (except that this year and last have been strangely mild). However, like I said, it's a pleasant place to go to school.

I'm also out of state applying to UW. I am hoping for a nice scholarship and would consider it as I love the Mountain West but I definitely would have to visit first. Hoping with an LSAT in the 160s I can get a decent scholarship. Also have already gotten into Denver (with scholarship), American U, and Hawaii so we will see what happens.

yup. I only got 5k/year OOS. Not sure how I feel about it but the stipulations are only a 2.0.

It seems like they don't give out much money. Can't really blame them given how little tuition costs. 13k is almost a full ride in-state and a 1/2ish ride out of state. Heck... I don't know how hard it is to get WY residency but that could be a full ride after your first year.

As do I. I would love to live in the Mtn West but have never been to Wyo. I wonder if they offer subsidies?

I'm probably gonna try to make a combo trip out of it when I visit the CO schools. I am the same. I really want to work in the mountain west.

Nice. I've noticed you in some of the other threads (hard to ignore Picard). What schools are you thinking about if I may ask?

How long were most of you in second stage of review for?

I was in for a little over two weeks, but that was over the holidays so YMMV.
