After going complete sometime in November, my application went "Under Review" today 12/4. Any other TLSers looking at BYU to save a buck or two?

Few salient data points:

165 - 75th percentile LSAT
162 - Median LSAT
158 - 25th percentile LSAT

3.85 - 75th percentile GPA
3.75 - Median GPA
3.41 - 25th percentile GPA

39 - USN rank

150 - Approximate class size

$10,950 - LDS tuition (!)
$21,900 - Non-LDS tuition

My file was complete on November 28th, and it went "Under Review" on December 4th, as well.

BYU is my first choice, for the price as well as the experience.

I am looking to save a buck or two also.

I took the LSAT in December so I am a little late, but BYU doesn't do much until late in the cycle so that shouldn't be too much of a worry.

How are you feeling about BYU's drop in employment stats over the last year?

I just moved to Provo and have talked to a couple of graduates that are unemployed. They both said almost half of the recent class has not secured a job yet... That is putting me off a bit. I also have a friend that is a 2L and one that is a 1L. They say that career services is hounding them to get resumes out and to be networking all of the time to find a job. No one is really getting OCI's. I thought BYU held a better prominence than this. Those that are securing employment have decreasing salaries too.

So I am contemplating trying to go to higher ranked schools, even with the extra debt that I would incur, to have better job prospects. That also seems like a little bit of a problem if you refer to Law School Transparency though. I am a little bit unsure what to do these days!

Are you set on BYU or considering other schools too?

Congrats on the interview and acceptance.

Right now I think it's my top choice because of the scholarship the y offered me. going through law school with minimal debt is my goal. I haven't heard back from the U of U though so maybe I'll get lucky and get something good there too then I'll make the decision. I got in to other schools but I think I want to stay regional.

Would I get an email to set up an interview with Dean if they were going to ding me?

Probably not. In the past, a phone call with Dean Hernandez has meant admission. I got the same email this afternoon.

Email to set up a meeting over the phone for next week! For those of you who already have had your phone call do you mind sharing what he talks about? Is it more like an interview or is it just to let you know you are accepted?

Also I was wondering how they determine scholarships. Is that based on the phone conversation or just on stats?

I'm in utah so I had my interview with him in person but it's probably the same. He asks you a few questions about yourself but overall most of the time is spent accepting you and telling you why BYU would be a great choice. I think if you have an interview they are planning to accept you. I was told during the interview that I had a scholarship but he said the details would be in the acceptance letter. The letter was dated the same day I had my interview and it stated that the scholarship committee had decided it(not sure if they just happened to meet that same day), so I'm not sure if the interview plays a role in scholarships or not.

Submitted application last week and received email for an interview tomorrow.

Any of you that have already had your interview: did Dean Hernandez say anything about the scholarship index score? Last year when I talked with GaeLynn she said it was a 236. I am just wondering if it changed with numbers going down a little bit and the class size getting a little bit smaller.

Right now I am at 235.35. 161 + (3.91x19). So I hope they are generous or that it dropped a point or two.

I had my interview on Tuesday. He said scholarship information would be in the mail about a week or two after his phone call.

If you are wanting to stay in Utah for patent law I think the U is a better option than the Y. With your numbers they should give you a substantial scholarship. I think the U has better networking with the patent firms and maybe a little better mentoring in school for that route. If you ever want to do a networking interview, go talk with Masgoff, Gillmore, and Israelson in North Salt Lake or Park City. That is a cool strictly patent firm. They are nice and really like their jobs.

Bump, any news on index score for scholarship consideration? My index is a 237.11, I'm wondering if that's going to be ballpark for aid.

jimmy_dean, sounds like you're in. Either that, or Dean Hernandez wants to personally inform you that you're on the waitlist. ;-)

Congrats. Hopefully I'll get a similar call/email from Gaelynn.

Yes. I got accepted last week. 236 is the typical cut off for money at the Y. Tuition is already so cheap they don't offer much compared to other schools. But your 167 should get you accepted easily and get you probably half tuition.

Meeting with Dean Hernandez on Tuesday! I can't imagine he would bring me in for the sole purpose of rejecting me, but we'll have to see. How were everyone's interview experiences?

for those that have interviewed, what did you wear? i don't want to be the doofus in a white shirt and tie, but i also don't want to be underdressed. it's also friday, so i assume dean hernandez won't be rocking his best mr. mac suit.

meeting was good, took about five minutes because i've met with dean hernandez previously. he told me i was accepted, talked a bit about why byu is awesome, and then told me i would be receiving a scholarship. i thought it would be declasse to ask about a dollar amount there, but it will be in the letter which i will hopefully receive soon. numbers were 167 and 3.70, if that helps anybody.

Thanks! Yeah, I really do think I'll end up at the Y. The only reason I would decide otherwise is if my wife and I start to feel like we're supposed to do something else.

BYU is where I really want to go, even for reasons other than the price.

How about you?
