Maybe they're not only concerned about their students. But law students around the nation. And wish to offer them an affordable legal education at a top 20 school. Patriotic if you ask me.

Did anyone with a 165 or lower get offered a full ride?

(Not hating the player, but it is a game!)

If they were fishing for medians there's no reason why they'd offer me a full ride just 3 days after they bumped me from 25-37 and 2 days after I deposited. They care about us guys. All of us. #MACcares

This. I'm as cynical as anyone, but when they upped my offer from 72k to 90k, I put down my second deposit and withdrew from all other schools. They already had me, and yet they decided to offer up another 55k. As much as I believe schools are in it to hit their numbers, this behavior makes no sense from that perspective.

Alternatively, they're desperate to hit their numbers, and are making goddamn sure none of their 166s get poached.

I agree with this. This was largely unnecessary for the people who were already deposited. Maybe JL and MAC just didn't feel like haggling over scholly offers all summer and just wanted to lock everyone in early so they could enjoy their vacations properly :D

I don't think anyone whose expected loan balance just got inexplicably halved is really concerned about the school's motives behind it.

I kind of care. I've been operating on the assumption that schools are acting in a rational self-interest sort of way. Getting an extra 55k that wasn't required kind of fucks with that assumption. I was showing up anyway, why give it to me? Do admissions people have souls? This would be new information.

Think about this a little harder folks.....

How would you feel if someone posted on board and said, "I withdrew in March, but the Dean of WashU just called me and offered me full tuition and housing"? Wouldn't that make you rather po'ed? And, perhaps even feel like a sucker for just having paid the second deposit?

Once they decided to go fishing in the Withdrawl bucket, WashU had no choice but to offer y'all the same deal. Otherwise, they would have a bunch of unhappy campers arriving in August. And since we are all lawyer wannabes, I have no doubt that some would threaten to file suit.

100% agree with BigDog and Magnalum. WUSTL is just playing a smarter admissions game than their competition.

Actually this exact thing happened to me yesterday, and I wasn't pissed off about it nor felt like a sucker.

And yeah, I got the same offer later, but I'm talking about the time between these two statements:

I think they are acting in their self interest. It might be that, with how easily and quickly info spreads, they don't want to anger the people already deposited by offering full rides to people with similar stats. It might not change things this year, but next year more kids might play hard to get and really mess up the process.

Edit: second too late. Nice work big dog
+1.

Yesterday they offered a full ride to someone who had withdrawn. This thread started seething with rage, then all of a sudden the committed TLSers were offered fullys. All was right in WUSTLand. Then today they went back to offering fullys to withdrawn folks.

Think about it.

Ok, I thought about it. What's your point? That schools offer merit scholarships in order to boost their medians, not solely out of the goodness of their hearts?

I might now be too committed to USC to change, but I'm bummed that I received no such offer from WUSTL. But that probably means that WUSTL knows their applicants well.

I dunno, maybe I'm an idealist, but MAYBE, just maybe, everyone doesn't have some sort of evil self-serving motive in the things they do? Not everyone out there is acting with the intention of being greedy/covering their own asses (although there's certainly more than enough (morally) bad lawyers out there). If that's really how you think people act all the time, then I really dont think I want you becoming a lawyer at all.

Schools all the time offer waitlisters full rides and some people who committed earlier get shafted, hell look at Minnesota THIS YEAR. I, and many other tlsers, were among some of the screwed ones, who cares, good for those full rides.

Regardless guys, quit looking a gift horse in the mouth. If you don't like it, give up the spot/full ride to someone who would be more than happy to take it. If you weren't offered a spot and coming here to complain, it just looks petty.

I mean would you rather them just not give scholarships at all? That wouldn't show desperation right? #MACcares #JLcares

Also, isn't it every admissions office's dream scenario to be able to give out tons of full rides to boost their medians as much as possible? What school wouldn't do that if they had the money? Just because most schools can't afford to, and, for whatever reason, WUSTL can this year, what's wrong with them doing it?

Look, I called up MAC this morning and expressed my heartfelt appreciation. The scholly I was originally offered was fair for my numbers, and they decided to give me another 55k. I was completely overwhelmed by the increase. That being said, I figure they must have a good reason to start randomly shelling out that kind of cash. So yeah, I'm kind of looking a gift horse in the mouth out of curiosity. It looks like a badass horse though.

Bingo. See the top of page 377 for who I was responding to.

And I don't think they are boosting here, just maintaining.

Also, a school being self-serving insofar as trying to maintain or boost medians has nothing to do with morality as far as I can tell (not directed at you of course, Xs20)

I wasn't directing it towards you Markin, I know you well enough to know you're genuinely grateful. More towards to guy that said they had to or else they'd get sued by prospective students (wut?)
sublime wrote:Spivey with his thoughts: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... &start=500
I like how Spivey implied there might have been some secret hidden reserve scholarship fund. I can just picture Janet and MAC entering some hidden vault and it's like a nuclear missle launch where they both have to enter some code to release the hidden full ride fund.
