Just thought I'd share for those of you who haven't had a chance to visit yet. And for those of you still waiting to hear back, the wait will be worth it once you have the acceptance in your hands!

Ahh, wish I'd seen this sooner - I was debating going as it was! Alas, when I was walking around I kept wondering if the people I saw were TLSers.

As to the age-old parent debates, I personally see no problem bringing them to see a campus/city or the like, but I couldn't imagine bringing any guest other than an SO to anything that would involve interacting with (future) peers in school. That would seem odd to me.

Only pic I took during my visit was of the collapsable stacks in the library. I geeked out pretty hard over those haha

I would totally recommend letting them come to STL with you (especially at 19) but would not suggest they come to the event. They aren't going to be at the school and would likely pick on little, useless stuff. For instance, if I were to attend a class with my mother, she would probably comment on a professor's accent, or the poor use of technology. While useful, this info isn't going to make or break decision. My dad would likely judge based on the attractiveness of the women.
I can totally relate to this with my dad

I understand your POV. And I will bring my parents to STL because they are both professionals and I do value their opinion. However, my main objective would be to have them help me search for apartments. Not to attend the event planned for that day.

Also another question, I heard there is some drinking at this event, obviously I won't be able to drink at these events and throughout my first year of law school due to my age. Do you think that would negatively affect my socialization at the school?

I will personally make sure you get to drink outside of school-sponsored events

Fortunately, most adcoms are boomers and will understand that boomer parents wont pay for a school they dont get to see because boomers feel as though they are the most important thing in the world. So, if you have boomer parents and they are going to pay, bring those boomer parents with you and let them pay.

Now grandparents...that's a whole different story, but...

Boomers are lazy fucks living off of everything their parents did, so if your boomer parents are going to pay its probably with their Greatest Generation parents' money and even if I wanted to say something bad about them, they lived through the Great Depression and fought in WWII (that war that their shitty parents thought would never happen again) so other than raising boomers they get a clean slate IMO.

tl;dr: boomers are everywhere and in control, let them have their way...for now.
Yeah that's extremely lazy logic. Using the term logic loosely, of course.

Lol! Thank you but I'm afraid that may be a little unethical considering I'm planning to be a future lawyer :P I have probably only drank 3-4 times in my life. I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to that stuff.

Well now I just feel like an asshole... :| But to answer your question, not being able to drink isn't gonna kill your social options, although it will reduce them. I wouldn't worry about it too much, especially since there's not much you can do about it anyway

This reminds me of sports stars that can't drink.

I wouldn't gaf if my parents went to classes and engaged the professors for the whole time if they were going to help me out for law school. (*has an 18 year old sibling needing parental support*) I love mommy and daddy but they still have 3 kids to put in college so no ASW for them, otherwise idc if they gun for me :D

I don't see what's wrong with bringing your parents, it's not a career fair or a job interview, its a visit to learn more about the place where you could be spending the next 3 years of your life and an event that most people tend to take more seriously than the law school even intends it to be (what I mean by that, is I've seen a lot of people where suits to Open Houses, and a majority treating it like a job interview, when I think the schools would rather have it be a more relaxed event). Some of these kids are still 21, and despite what I thought I knew, I now realize a different set of eyes are the best thing in some situations. People have different relationships with their parents and rely on their parents for different things, while I believe in my personal situation there'd be no way I'd take my parents to ASD or whatever, because I think it has the potential to do me more harm than good, I can certainly see why someone else would/how that would benefit them. For me I'll just take my mom on a tour when the weathers nice and everything looks good and give her a text book.

Let's say you're in a office and some 40 year old brings in his 75 year old dad to show around the office, that certainly wouldn't be viewed as being an adolescent/dependent whatever, but a son wanting to show off his accomplishments to his father, but as the they get younger at some point that doesn't become ok? If what you're saying is correct, then why can they bring their S.O. or kids? Is that really professional? Would you bring your kids or your wife to an interview? I don't even see any consequences to bringing your parents, the faculty and staff certainly won't look down upon on for attending the event. So then you just have some fellow admits who think you might not be as grown up as them, and who really cares about that.

Although at the same time I could be completely wrong, I haven't even gotten into WUSTL.

Ok there is clearly an age?/experience gap here. I've worked full time and been financially independent since the age of 16. First, no 40 year old professional bring their parent to the office nor would their 75 year old parent ask to. Second, a significant other lives with you. They will move across the country to live in an entirely new location to be together. They absolutely, 100% need to be part of the decision. Parents won't be there to hold your hand during school, your SO will, let go. Brest feeding should end at the age of one.

TLDR: ASD's not a professional event, its a relaxed event, a 'visit'.
People have different relations with parents
Why no parent, but wife & kid ok?
You no bring wife or kid to a interview
Who even would judge you? Teachers/Staff wont mind,
Just other admits might judge you and who cares about that.

BUT WHAT DO I KNOW I CAN'T EVEN GET IN

Sorry to be off topic, but I'm afraid to ask in the Choosing Law School forum, but what are some benefits that are unique to WUSTL that would draw some of you away from GWU. The majority consensus is retake which I won't say is bad advice, I'm just waiting for my cycle to end so I can make an educated decision on whether or not a year off would be beneficial since I am so young.

Thoughts?

Don't worry dude, you'll get in soon.

And no hard feelings, teiswei. I just don't think it's wise to immediately assume someone is immature if they bring their parents, just like someone may not necessarily be a jerk if they wear a suit.

Yeah that's along what I meant. I don't care if they bring them or not, but I do have a problem with judging someone based on if they do or not.
