Fordham doesn't easier, claiming they don't want to compete with other law schools lying. How rare is this practice?

Very few T30 schools have published salary info...I'm sure it's partly because some of the numbers would discourage 0L's....but also because none of their peers do. Imagine how it would look if Emory or BU published less-than-impressive salary numbers and no one else published anything at all. Minus the "honorable-ness" of being transparent, 0L's would be scared off by it. When there is no data, they assume that it's okay or that they'll be okay (dat special snowflake)...when there is data...well it becomes a little harder to rationalize that you'll end up okay.

ETA: I'm so bummed that I"m not at ASW....hope everyone has fun though, friends don't let friends drink and TLS

Actually, a lot of the T30 do publish salary info. While the numbers reported drop off markedly after UCLA/Vandy/USC, there tends to at least be 33+% of the class reporting salary info. Based on this year's rankings, here are the schools that report and the percentage of private practice grads who report their salary (I'm using c/o 2011 LST numbers just because I don't have the time to check every school's website):

UCLA - 82%
Vanderbilt - 79%
USC - 75%
UMN - 45%
WUSTL - doesn't report
GWU - 52%
Alabama - doesn't report
Emory - doesn't report
Notre Dame - doesn't report
IUB - 51%
Iowa - 80%
W&L - 71%
U Washington - doesn't report
ASU - doesn't report
BU - doesn't report
BC - 70%

So it's about a 50/50 split between those who do and those who don't report salary statistics within the T15-30. It doesn't seem like Minnesota or GWU, WUSTL's closest peers, have any problems attracting students even with their less-than-stellar salary info. And if students were actually looking at that information, they'd be flocking to BC in droves with its impressive $145,000 starting median for private practice.

Given that salary reporting isn't universal, and that some of the schools who report are admittedly reporting only a partial picture, it's understandable why they wouldn't publish salaries. But it's really frustrating when trying to make a good, well reasoned analysis of the costs and benefits of my options. If anything, this could be hurting WUSTL, since now I can only assume that large firm gigs are well paying and can't make many assumptions about the rest.

I've always thought of median salary data as a misleading and useless metric anyway because of the bimodal distribution (unless it's broken up into public vs. private, which not all schools do). Also, if reporting is self-selected and not random, then what do I care what a statistically insignificant sample of a class's salary was? Doesn't tell you anything, IMO.

True, and usually the differences that are apparent in salaries are reflected in the size of hiring firms, but sometimes salary info is illuminating just for the shock value. Like when people hype up Iowa and W&L for being in the top 30

Iowa:

W&L:

and for comparison, the lower ranked BC:

Of course, schools like Minnesota and GWU use incomplete statistics to make their outcomes seem better than they really are. I really hate how lax the reporting standards are.

Oh ok, yeah, I saw it when BC's numbers were labeled W&L and about to go off about how misreporting like that should be punishable by jail time.

I woke up this morning, logged-in to TLS and the first thought I had was "I bet the WUSTLers are so hung over" and I went straight here.

All of the admissions people will be busy running ASD all day today (runs until 5) so I probably wouldn't expect much movement on the scholly or decision fronts today

Nah I still think the WL and rejection pile comes out today. In all likelihood a lot of stuff has probably already been decided it's just a matter of telling us.
