Re: University of Iowa Class of 2016
As an FYI for any of you interested in, or interested in being interested in, IP, Prof. Bohannon is going to lead the IP Advocacy "class" again next year (although you have to be a 2L to participate). IP Advocacy is an intensive IP moot court competition prep class with participants competing in a patent, trademark, or copyright competition. I would say I practiced upwards of 10 times w/ professors, fellow IP ad participants, and area attys coming in to bench us. If you're interested in oral advocacy, this is one of the best ways to hone your skills.
It has only been going a few years, but this year has been a runaway success. We had two teams each in trademark, copyright, and patent competitions.
Trademark: Iowa placed 1st and 3rd out of 28 teams in the Midwest regional, bolstered by being 1st and 2nd in brief scores. The 1st place team competed at nationals and narrowly missed out on top team overall, finishing second. The nationals team had the top brief score in the country while the second Iowa team was tied for 3rd overall in brief score. The second Iowa team ended up 9th overall out of approximately 80 teams nationally.
Iowa won the regional competition last year as well, and placed 3rd at nationals.
Copyright: One of the Iowa teams was in the top-8 and the other made it to the final 4. One of the Iowa students placed top-10 in individual oral advocacy.
Patent: One of the Iowa teams had the top oral argument score and placed well at regionals. The second Iowa team had the highest brief score, won the regional, and will compete in the national tournament in April.
Basically, we all kicked butt and word is getting out that Iowa is doing some great things in IP competitions and the program will only get better...

It doesn't require paperwork, so I doubt it's binding.

I'm 90% sure it does cover tuition increase, but don't quote me on that. You could email the financial aid office for confirmation.sublime12089 wrote:For the full tuition scholly, I don't suppose it covers tuition increases, does it?
Also, I may email for confirmation, but I have heard mixed things about whether the April 1st deposit/email to accept the scholly is binding?
April 1st is seat deposit. If you miss it, you risk losing your spot and scholarship. I'd get your money in by then if at all possible, and if not, email them to ask for an extension.

Scholarships are rolling. So, they may have given out all scholarship funds (and also may not have) but will re-give those funds if people with scholarship offers decide not to enroll. People got scholarships into the summer the last two years I'm pretty sure. Again, just my understanding.

I've decided to withdraw. Good luck, and I hope my scholarship goes out to some of you!

Iowa City has a lot of homeless people. They are able to bum quite a bit of money from drunk kids on the pedmall and it looks like they get fed daily at local churches. However it does seem like the number of homeless has decreased by quite a bit over the last few years.mkemmitt wrote:Toured today. Yeah, 200k of debt that has to be serviced by a median income of ~55k seems like a horrible outcome.typ3 wrote:Former law students.mkemmitt wrote:Toured today. I really love the campus....but what's with all the homeless people on the pedestrian mall along college and Dubuque streets?

I feel like an idiot for not being able to find this, but where is the page to submit the first deposit? Or do we have to mail it in?

Sign into isis then click on admissions profile. They have a link on that page where you can submit your deposit.Xs20 wrote:I feel like an idiot for not being able to find this, but where is the page to submit the first deposit? Or do we have to mail it in?

Ahh ok. Keep getting an error when I click on that link, so that explains why I couldn't find it. I'll just try again tomorrow, thanks.BigHerky wrote:Sign into isis then click on admissions profile. Yeah, I'm getting the same error. Usually iowa is pretty quick to get isis/icon back up and running so I would think it should be back shortly.Xs20 wrote:Ahh ok. We have to send a scholarship acceptance email in addition to depositing by tomorrow?sublime12089 wrote:I sent an email to admissions that was then forwarded to fin aid on friday, but I have not heard back yet. The scholarship acceptance email that we have to send is not binding is it? I know the deposit is not, but I wanted to make sure that the scholarship is not any different. I also asked whether the full tuition award covers possible tuition increases and will let you guys know if and when I hear back.
Right now, for me it is between Iowa and WUSTL. Still waiting on hearing back from Vandy, IU, ASU, and scholly info from W and L. Regardless, as long as nothing is binding, I will put down the deposit at Iowa tomorrow.

Yeah, you're right. From the email:
To accept our offer of admission to Iowa Law and your Merit Scholarship, please e-mail law-financialaid@uiowa.edu on or before April 1, 2013. To retain your scholarship, you must also submit deposits by the deadlines stated in your admission offer.

I'm sure they do, but it's not. You can still withdraw at any time.
