Does anyone know if Bama has to admit a certain percentage of in-staters?

I'm not sure myself, but I think someone might have asked about this earlier in the thread...

TBH, Alabama was one of my top choices but they are taking so long now to get back to me (maybe because they're trying to get a lot of in-staters or high LSATs first?) that it's getting a little annoying. They're coming across really uppity...

That was probably me. I'm in-state and was just curious. I heard someone mention another public law school a while ago and the fact that they had to have a certain number of residents to out of staters.

164s don't typically get scholarships. Frankly, most don't even get in.

Alabama's median is 163. They're being more hesitant this year (rightfully), but the 164's will get in eventually. I know it's unfortunate to wait, but just saying "164s... don't even get in" is just conjecture.

Um, no. If you go to Bama's website you will see that their medians are 165/3.83.

http://www.law.ua.edu/admissions/quick-facts/

If you go to LSN and look through the last three cycles, the cycles since their median increase, you will see that most 164s are waitlisted or are still marked pending. Also, and correct me if I'm wrong, I don't remember seeing any 164s with scholarship money.

For the record, was just giving an update. When I got accepted they told me I would be getting information in the mail about things and some people reported hearing about scholarships later on.. So was just giving a general update.

I've gotten 30k+ from two higher ranked schools so I can't justify attending Bama without money.. But I'm giving it some time

As a 164 myself, I completely agree. Last year I was waitlisted and I doubt I'll make the cut this year. I'm just hoping to flood them with recs and get on the radar.

Well I guess I should say hello! I went complete on 12/10 and was accepted on 1/18 by phone call. (Well actually I was accepted a few days earlier than that but missed the call and returned it on the 18th). Got my shirt this weekend, which is too small  but whatever. I'm still waiting on G'town but let's face it, I'm a 167/2.4. It's a miracle that they bothered to regular WL me last year (and with such a late app) and even if they did accept me I don't think there is any scenario where I could justify the cost compared to Bama in-state. So I probably won't bother with the LOCI for them.

I went to ASD on 2/1 and I have to say UA's staff are one hell of a sales team. I went in feeling ambivalent b/c I'm not too keen to be stuck in AL for the rest of my life, but they reminded me of why I enjoyed undergrad there so much.
ALgooner wrote:Hey guys, if any of you have questions about living in Tuscaloosa, let me know! I went to undergrad at UA and have lived in T-town all my life.
It's been several years since I've lived in T-town myself and now I'm kind of overwhelmed by the prospect of having to relearn it, esp. the campus and surrounding areas. My sister was looking at an apartment in the Pink House downtown a while ago and though she didn't take it, I fell in love with it. I'm preemptively sad because there probably won't be anything available there when I am ready to move. I really, really loved the old-house charm to it. Do you know of anything else that is kind of similar to that? I really don't think I'm going to be interested in the typical apartment.

Alabama will not be able to be as picky as previous years (i.e. last year, the year before that...). Though not many 164's typically get in (GPA being the deciding factor), the majority of 165's typically do (see LSN). It would appear they are attempting to round out a class similar to last year's... and they won't. 164's and 165's will get more scholarship from comparable schools and admitted to better institutions than in previous years. They can't afford to act as if conditions haven't changed... even if they continue to act as such. Perhaps us 164's won't get in this year, but UA will suffer for it more than they would have in previous years: their medians will go down (possibly ranking... etc.) because regular admit - acceptance's can now afford to be admit - "oh wait I got into T14!"'s.

Also, they have whittled their class size down considerably the last few years. How low can they go?

Jut remember, they will always have the 20 or so honors students who have no LSAT and basically 4.0s to balance out their prime market: the super-splitters who have T-14 LSATs and horrible GPAs. They recruit them very well with a lot of $$ and it seems to work well. This is why I tend to believe their medians are safe.

kayleighcheyenne,

Didn't you say you wanted to work in the south though? If you want to work in the south and money is a factor, you might want to apply to UGA.They would probably give you the equalizer and their tuition is reasonable. When it comes to regional schools, you really need to go to school where you want to practice. I hear it is super easy to establish residency in GA as well.

As far as Bama, how much would you need to attend? I saw two 164s in 2009 that got 10k and 15k. I believe this was the year before their median rise though...not sure. You might want to talk with them and try to negotiate using your 90k offers. If you get money from UGA, you could use that as well. Tell them how much you love their clinics and want to work in the south. They are more than willing to bend over backwards for students that are accepted. At least, that's the vibe I get.

Recently got a call thanking me for my patience (I submitted my app a few months ago)... they said to please continue being patient as they keep making decisions. The voicemail didn't make it sound like I needed to give anyone a call back so I think it was just an update, but has anyone else gotten a call like this? Was it meant to just be a reassurance that I haven't been forgotten?

Did you stay on the waitlist until rejected or did you withdraw. I think I am going to ride it until the bitter end and I'm just hoping it was the latter.
