Re: University of Utah c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
Hi all, new to the TLS boards, but I figured I'd throw some knowledge (or lack of) into the pool. I am finishing up my senior year of undergrad at the University of Utah. I'm more than happy to help answer any questions regarding Utah, Salt Lake City, or the U. No, I'm not Mormon. I moved to Salt Lake City when I was 18.
Applied 12/05, UR 12/11, update 1/10.
Also, a random U of U number (801-58X-XXXX) called while I was in class today. I confidently answered and smiled. "Hello, is this WisemanAEKDB?" "Yes!" "Hi this is Jose from FedEx, your package is available for pick up..."

How do you like the facilities of the law school?WisemanAEKDB wrote:Hi all, new to the TLS boards, but I figured I'd throw some knowledge (or lack of) into the pool. I got a 154 on the June LSAT and met with Reyes. He literally told me "Your profile is great, but your LSAT score shows that you're plainly not able to handle the logical thinking taught in our school." Ouch, burn. Bumped up to a 163 in October. We met again and he was extremely friendly/ much more awesome about my chances this time.

Also, how do you like SLC as a nonmormon? Nick provided some great perspective earlier, but would love to hear your opinion too.

Facilities are poor at best. I may be a spoiled undergrad, but the U is a construction heaven. Everything is brand new. The Marriott Library (main library) is a total beast and is a great study place. The buildings at the U are either palaces of brand new technology and awesomeness, or something straight out of 1960's hell (as Quinney currently is). Don't let that stop you though.1693 wrote:How do you like the facilities of the law school?WisemanAEKDB wrote:Hi all, new to the TLS boards, but I figured I'd throw some knowledge (or lack of) into the pool. As a beer enthusiast, SLC is a bit drab for me. I'm really not into the religion scene, and it is fairly prominent. Student life as an undergrad was odd here, as there are a TON of students married with kids and 30+. There is almost no "student life" here, and we have a street with a 7-11, Subway, and burger place. There are no bars near campus at all, although the heart of downtown is close (20 minute walk, 5 minute subway ride). It's COLD HERE (was -4 yesterday), and the snow is AMAZING if you're into that. I snowboarded a ton before I got serious about school. Now I no longer can which is a drawback. Overall, the student life is non existent, but that might be okay for law school. Also, I do not care for conservatives here, and EVERYONE is a conservative and they'll let you know. Gun control isn't taken lightly here. About the religion, people leave you alone, but they generally aren't interested in being your friend if you're not involved with the church (which is fine by me, but I hear horror stories of my friends growing up in Utah being non-Mormon and getting the shit kicked out of them). Overall, I love Salt Lake and there are cool people here, but I definitely would not want to raise kids here.

phenomenally cheap student discounts. They range from $1500-$2000, but if you're a U student, you can get them for $375 (park city) to $450 (snowbird)Sugar Lumps wrote:How much is a year pass there?

Re: University of Utah c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
It is the only campus that allows CC on campus. I live one block east of Big Ed's. I'm a frequent patron, haha. Dating wasn't too bad, as I was in a fraternity on campus. I currently live with my non-mormon girlfriend. Life ain't too bad!nickb285 wrote:Out of curiosity, Wiseman, where do you live? It sounds like you've had an experience with Utah similar to how my parents felt living in Sandy, as opposed to what I've seen living in Salt Lake.
He is correct though, the number of available undergrad ladies is quite a bit smaller here since the Mormons get married after six months (if they're taking things slow) and they marry young--the missionaries come back at 22 looking to be with a woman in a matrimonial fashion, and many of the young women pretty much just go to school to meet their RM. Definitely made dating more of a pain in undergrad, although I imagine that this difference will probably be less pronounced in the law school due to the older and more career-oriented student body.
Though I have to say, while a bar or two near campus would be nice, Big Ed's is the SHIT. Start your evening there after class, cheap beer and cheap food, then head downtown.
Utah is quite conservative--and if you're really anti-gun, it's worth knowing that Utah is one of the only, if not the only, publicly-funded universities that allows concealed carry on campus--but again, this changes based on where you live.

Thought I might add my perspective to the conversation. I was accepted a couple weeks ago and did my undergrad at the U. I'm Mormon and I wouldn't disagree with any of the comments above. I fall into the typical stereotype for a Mormon guy in his late twenties, married with a kid. As an undergrad before I was married I like to think I meshed well with non Mormons going to clubs and parties but with a wife and kid it's not really my thing anymore. I now tend to hang out with people with kids since we have similar interests. I can't speak for all Mormons but I don't think the ones that went to the U for undergrad will bother you too much about religion. I dont talk about my religion unless someone asks me.

Just got the welcome letter in the mail . Small envelope, single page. Evidently they're planning on having the new building complete by summer 2015.

To the people who've gotten in yet... Did your "in review" change dates at all? Mine updated from 12/07 to 1/10, and now I've been stuck since then.

Mine update from 12/7 to 1/15 in review. Today I am still listed as in review but all of the boxes and requirements from the bottom right of the status checker are gone.
I am desperately trying to not read to much into that right now.

Re: University of Utah c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
So, I got a letter from Utah in a generic small envelope today... and I was admitted!!! They totally faked me out. I was certain it was a waitlist at the very least. Considering everyone else so far has received a phone call I guess I am part of the first wave of "regular" admits.
I look forward to visiting. I am very happy. Hopefully they give me some money (or at least an out of state tuition waiver for the first year).

Accepted via phone call on Tuesday morning, followed by a nice letter that night. What a relief! Had a nice phone call with Reyes about financial aid, and overall had a good time. He said I was admitted on Friday afternoon, about 1 hour after he asked me to update my transcripts... haha. Congrats to the other admits. I will definitely strongly consider attending if I can get some financial aid/merit scholarships! Once again, any U of U or SLC information you can PM me or anything.
