Okay then do that. "lul wut" to a scholarship offer (at a LS where only 60% get any tuition reduction) is incredibly immature. I agree that 250k is an inflated number for LS, but most DC schools are pretty inflated. Additionally- GULC, GW, and American are all notorious for not matching peer-scholarships and being tough on tuition reduction. It's the way of DC. Who would've thought going to a school 3 blocks from the white house would be so expensive!?! Good luck all. Glad to see some much needed WL movement.

For those still waiting on a response...I just got an email stating that they just finished all pending decisions and that we should hear by this afternoon or Monday morning. I'm sure waitlist will be hearing soon then.

Needless to say, withdrawing. Good luck, all.
I know this will offend some, but it just kills me when people get indignant about not receiving a MERIT scholarship to their liking. Your application didn't MERIT a bigger scholarship. Maybe you should have worked harder to get a better GPA, maybe your LSAT was low, either way you have been offered a scholarship that covers 20% of your tuition, if you want more money go to a lower ranked school that will be happy to have you. The entitlement of 20-somethings today just drives me crazy.

I too, got the 10k a year scholarship and am damn happy to have received it. I wish it had been more, but obviously there are candidates more worthy and they deserve the money they're getting.
What is this? Calling people entitled because they complain that a school like GW wants them to pay $250,000 is wrong and not fair. That is a ridiculously inflated number and not at all consistant with the financial value of a degree from the school.

The naiveté and the moral high handedness of 20 or 30 or 40-somethings today just drives me crazy.
I was trying to be nicer, but it is crazy think someone would
Be grateful to have to pay 200k for a coin flips chance at a job.

The rank is actually irrelevant in his argument, because GW is known to give way less than any of it's peer schools or even higher ranked schoolss because you get to work in the "fantastic DC"
I will give you that rank shouldn't be a focal point of my argument. In my frustration, I misstated my opinion. Rank is overvalued.
That said, George Washington does not owe you a cheap, risk-free education and more than BMW owes you a cheap car. It's a private institution and if you don't think it's worth the cost you can simply not go.

I don't have any issue with folks negotiating for better scholarships, but if you're denied an increase accept it. It's theirs to offer and yours to accept or reject. They don't owe you more and you don't owe them acceptance.

As far as the Cost of Attendance, the only cost for which GW should be held responsible is the cost of tuition and fees. The fact that apartments in DC are so expensive is hardly the Universities fault. Should you weigh the higher cost of living in your decision making, absolutely, but acting like the school should give you a better scholarship because of it is asinine.

For those claiming that GW is cheap when it comes to financing, exactly where are you getting that info? I'll give you that state schools are more generous, but then they have state funding. The tuition at GW is comparable to all of it's non-state peer schools, and one of very few to have need-based grants in addition to merit scholarships.

As for whether merit scholarships are really scholarships or just discounted tuition, it's merely semantics. There is an aid budget. Admissions staff can only give out so much money in scholarships (or discounts if you want to call them that). They choose to give that money to those applicants they deem to have the most merit, those that would be the most valuable additions to the student body.

If you think law school as a whole is too expensive and too risky, I can't argue with you. It is very expensive and awfully risky. I, for one, think it's worth the risk for an opportunity that wouldn't be there otherwise. If you don't think so, then you should look into other industries. If enough people do so, the schools will have to shrink their class sizes and lower their tuition.

For now it's expensive. And risky. And still I am grateful for the opportunity.

Were you on the WL, or still waiting to hear back for a regular decision? I applied a few weeks before the admission deadline, but took the Feb. LSAT so my file wasn't complete until March 6th. Still haven't heard anything, except for one date change on the status check (hoping no news is good news).

For everyone that heard back, did you receive an email first or did you see on the applicant status check page? I have been checking that thing every half hour for the past month haha.

I was already admitted to AUWCL, so I'm definitely staying in DC, but would be nice to get into and go to GW law.

Sure, but what's wrong with people venting their frustration that some school is giving them a particularly shitty deal compared to the rest of their cycle? Does their post on TLS somehow force the schools to give up more money? Isn't it potentially possible that their posts might clue others in that certain schools tend to give people particularly shitty deals, and therefore encourage them to apple elsewhere instead/as well, which is exactly what you suggest should be the outcome for schools who do that.

In order for schools to be punished for being a bad deal, people applying have to know that they are bad. What's wrong with getting the word out?

This forum exists for various reasons, for supporting each other as we go through the app process and law school, to the exchange of information about what we can expect when we apply. People bitching about getting a shitty deal is more signal than noise compared to the average TLS post. Hell, this post is more noise than his original post was.

Sure, but the school doesn't exist in a vacuum. Whether the higher COA is their fault or not, they should take it into account if they don't want people bitching that their school is a bad deal. They aren't entitled to not having it be taken into account.

I'd have to say so =/

110 or 115 maybe not so much, but 150 is 50% more than he asked for, so it would be noticeably longer than others and I'm not sure how strict the limit is. Honestly, I'd say just do as much as you can with the 100. You don't want to put yourself at a disadvantage for something so small. I'm sure they know the word count is hugely restrictive and they probably aren't expecting much.

I just got in off of the waitlist on Monday - super excited. However, I just got promoted at work recently, and my plan is to work an additional year before starting law school. Does anyone know if GW offers deferrals, and if so, if they offer them to people on the waitlist?

I got that 10k per year scholarship today after negotiation too. At first I thought that 30k is per year, then I realized it is the total amount.
Haven't sent my withdrawal letter yet but it is no way I will pay 220k for GW. It is s good school at a great location, but just not worth the money .
I may change my mind if I hit the jackpot this weekend.

Different in that GW is one of a very select group of law schools that give need based grants. The federal government believes that, unlike undergrad, law school is a privilege and therefore students are not entitled to federal grants. Most schools' financial aid is simply letting you know if you qualified for grad plus or etc. Other schools, like GW, give grants too in their fin aid package, the funds of which normally come from alumni donations.

Yep, but to add to this, the drawback is that if you do receive a need-based grant you have to borrow the maximum stafford loan amount ($20,500) each year.
