Recruiting materials are, in the end, simply that--recruiting materials. It doesn't mean that you are on a special watch list or will get special treatment when you apply. If you feel like you would want to go to Yale and can offer them a strong application, then do so. But reading too much into recruiting events/materials/tactics won't make you a stronger applicant, which is what really matters.

ETA: tons of UG institutions and large companies will make grand overtures in getting you to apply, but it is definitely no indication of how you will fare once you do. Mailing a nice packet of materials is pretty standard for any UG/law school recruiting.

So I would actually say that if HYS is sending you targeted stuff, its kind of their way of saying, "hey, you've got a better chance than you think" In fact that's exactly what the Yale materials said.

Fair. I do think it is to say "you've got a better chance than you think," but it is not to say, "we think we want you!" Of the pool they send it to, many applicants might otherwise have written off Yale as out of their league. The recruiting material is to get them to actually take themselves seriously as an applicant, not to give any indication of admission probability. There is a subtle difference between "you have a better chance than you think" and "you should read into being sent these materials as us wanting you before we've even seen your application!"

I sort of agree here. The wording on the letter very much screamed "apply, please, we'll help you do so, too!"

Seemed a bit more than typical recruiting junk. Like I said originally, this was the first envelope of ANY LS that I opened from the mail. I understand that usually it's garbage recruiting stuff.

I don't think anybody assumes a school wants them regardless of their application.

And they will help you... apply. Your background is something that they are looking for. But it is not a "big deal" indicator of anything in terms of admissions, do you see my distinction? I've been to so many "high-priority candidate" events to know that it is just a recruiting tactic to get you to consider yourself as perhaps more capable than you thought you were, but it is by no means an indication that they will view you more favorably than if you hadn't received those materials.
Jacq2212 wrote:I don't think anybody assumes a school wants them regardless of their application.
It was a hyperbole. I am just trying to draw the distinction between encouraging someone to apply and having that encouragement interpreted as a leg-up in admissions.

I think you all should apply AND I don't think the materials mean all that much. No reason to overthink it. Take a flyer.

Same here. I'm thinking it will probably seem weird to Yale that I submitted this late with just a June LSAT, but man, I agonized over that 250 word essay.

Today I received snail mail from Yale that asked me to apply because I'm either of lgbt or minority status. It included a number to call the director of recruitment and/or admissions if I have any questions in how to apply or how to work my app.

Is this standard LS mail that looks fancy because they sent it first class and it's from Yale?

168/3.75 non-urm hispanic -- I never applied to Yale.
As a hispanic, why would you call yourself a "non-urm" (especially after receiving that package)?

I think that the package that you and others received is extremely special.

1) Not all Hispanics are URMs for law school application purposes.

2) I received the package and I'm white (but LGBT).

Just finished a new Yale 250 (changed the topic). Please let me know if you are willing to read it over, and provide a couple comments (i.e. yay or nay).

Thank you!

Checking in as I'm finishing up my 250. I love everything about YLS (except the location -- can it switch spots with SLS?) so I feel I kinda have to apply, even if my chances are slim.

ETA: People applying this late can't hope to hear before like April, right?

It seems like March is as likely as April, especially of you're in, and February even seems possible.

Good to know. I realized yesterday how financially disastrous for me it would be if I deposited somewhere and then got into Yale (not that I expect that to happen).
