FYI for anyone interested in need based aid. I got my package from Michigan and it's 25 in need based grants a year. The rest in loans. About comparable to most schools besides HYS (way more generous). Good luck everyone!

Is that after you finished your NeedAccess? As of now, all I have listed is $20,500 in federal loans but I plan on turning in NeedAccess tonight. If I can get 20+ in need based grants a year, that would almost turn me into a lock to go to UM.

I submitted the need access form on 01/31 and filled out the finaid form on ASW in late Feb/early March. Whenever it became available. And I got an email today telling me to go to https://wolverineaccess.umich.edu to see my award statement. 25k in need based aid. 20ishk in unsubsidized loans. And the rest in grad PLUS loans.

I know it's a personal question (and totally understand if you would rather not, or would prefer to do so in a PM), but would you mind sharing some of your financial background info? I'm trying to wrap my head around not being awarded any need based aid other than staffords.

are you married with kids? be careful about putting more weight on being with your loved one.. if you do things right on 1l you shouldnt have that much time anyway for him/her and upenn has better job placement stats..

We're getting married in 2.5 months and don't want to spend the first three years of marriage apart. The long distance thing would suck when we're both broke law school students and plane tickets would add up. Obvi we haven't made any final decisions yet, but we really really prefer to go to the same school, as we also enjoy being classmates (met in college). *Sigh* We'll see....

I didn't mean to be rude. I have seen people around this site making life altering decisions based solely on a new relationship. But you are getting married so it seems you are very committed. Good luck with whatever you end up doing. Considering you got a nice UPenn aid offer maybe you should ask Michigan for some money if you don't get any in the next few weeks...

^Ugh, I hate that TLSers often have tunnel vision and can't imagine that there's a life outside law school. I am choosing my school largely based on where my SO is attending school. He got into several T14s and/or schools near the T14s I was accepted to. Everybody fucking relax, going to one top law school instead of another because you want to be near your spouse isn't quite the catastrophe it's made out to be around here.

Especially because people who have serious life partners have extremely different financial considerations than single people who aren't planning to get married anytime soon. What if one partner comes from money? What if one partner plans to work to offload the debt burden of the other partner? What if the partners are planning to pool their savings and expenses to make COA lower than it would be for a single student? Being in a different stage of life makes a married/engaged/committed person's calculus different from yours as a single person. One size does not fit all with advice here.

I don't understand... I filled out my form with basically no assets and thousands of dollars in undergrad loan debt and it said I wasn't eligible. I will receive less in merit scholarship to go to UM (22500/yr) than people will get in need grants (25000/yr)??.. confused.

^I got the same result with similar attributes (high debt, low assets). I guess it's the Pell Grant thing and the zip code of your home.

um, it's because we have need... That's why. Also, I suspect it's merit vs. need. If they know you'll get generous need aid, they won't bother giving you merit aid and vice versa. I did tell Michigan that I'm choosing my law school based on finaid packages, so I don't know if that helped. The aid is about comparable to other schools though.

Anyway, I regret bringing it up. "low assets" and "basically no assets" is not equal to NO assets. Look at your EFC. That should give you an idea on how much aid you can hope for.
