I have never seen mean-spirited competition. I don't think I've really seen any competition at all. I've seen a lot of collaboration. Students are happy most of the time, except when they're over-stressed. So basically, they're happy except for December. And even then it's difficult to really say. I do know of a few actual freak-outs, but I suspect a lot of people are pilling on the woe-is-law-school just because it's sort of a thing that people do. Although I don't know what'll happen second semester once everyone knows their grades.

Our reputation is that we're a happy place. I think we are. I'm really happy, and was happy, even during finals.

This is a tough question to get good answers to, because people that live off-campus and people that live in the dorms both seem to be happy with their choices.

I live off-campus in Brooklyn. I love my apartment. The commute's less than 25 minutes. I really like having Manhattan close by, but still separately over there. I have a studio in a great neighborhood for less than what one would cost on-campus, although with utilities, it's a little more than living in D'ag with suite-mates. I live here because I just didn't want to live in dorms again. I thought it would impede feeling like a real adult with my own place. I don't feel isolated. I just hop over when I went to socialize with classmates.

But you should know that apartment-hunting in NYC is a terrible, absurdist farce. It's not hard to find an apartment, but it is extremely difficult to get any specific apartment. I can talk more about this if you want.

I don't know the other side of the story as well, but there are certainly upsides to the dorms. No chase, reliable landlord, extreme convenience to class, bitching location in the middle of the Village. About 80% of the 1Ls choose to live in the dorms. (Then again, when they're 2Ls, a bunch of them move out.)

You have to fill out the needaccess form. You should've gotten an email about it but it might not come until a few weeks after you get in. You hear in March/April I think.
