UVA c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle) Forum

Anyone know if this is an issue, ethical or othewise? I wrote in my final LOCI that I would attend UVA if admitted, which at the time was true. When they admitted me I withdrew from my other acceptances and placed the initial deposit. However, I also was just admitted to Texas off of the waitlist and would like to be able to consider it. Would there be possible negative consequences to withdrawing from UVA?

Other than losing money? Can't see what could happen

Ethically? Yes, because you said you would do something and aren't going to do it. Real world consequences? Just losing the deposit probably

Ya I for sure will lose the deposit. I'm more worried about something along the lines of UVA writing a new school and telling them not to take me or something.

Plus, I honestly don't want them to feel like I'm screwing them over. At the time I said it though, I had no options that I would have attended over UVA.

I would assume that once Texas gets their deposit check they could care less what you said to UVA.

maybe a call as opposed to an email might be safer-- just something thanking them and also saying your circumstances have changed. personally, i think it offers a nice touch on something they probably won't care/do anything about but they def could if they are sufficiently mad.

You're not the first one to get off a WL, so I'm sure they've seen this in the past and a brief explanation along these lines would probably be appreciated.

i'm hoping there's gonna be more than one seat open soon. got a friend with a deposit at uva who's been non-stop calling/ emailing nyu. just hoping all of this settles down by the end of june

I'm a big believer in deontological ethics. using finders keepers, i think it should go to atj.

This may be true, but you should always ask anyway. I withdrew yesterday and I hope one of you gets my merit aid.

And if you do get my spot, PM me so we can discuss you subletting the apartment in Ivy that I already signed a lease for!

I was Wl'ed at UVA but just withdrew to attend WashU and yes I have a basically full ride to WashU. UVA was my top choice, but they didn't accept me or offer me any money. I was accepted off their WL last time I applied but my priorities were different then. It basically came down to either

1. Me going to Charlottesville and saying I will attend if accepted
2. Me going to law school for free practically

I chose #2.
