Double Depositing vs Staying on WL's

Some schools threaten to rescind admission offers if students accept multiple offers after a certain date, i.e. double deposit. But does anyone know how this works with waitlists? What I mean is, generally do schools view staying on a WL the same as double depositing? Has anyone ever heard of schools rescinding offers for students who make a seat deposit but remain on other schools' WL's?

I'd imagine it's okay to do. There are always stories about people who enroll at a school, find out the day before classes start that they got into their dream school off the WL, and pack up and leave.

I think that's the point of a seat deposit in the first place...so that the school still gets something if you decide to bail after their seat deadline.

I had this conversation with the dean of my school. It's fine to stay on a WL... you should only deposit at one school, but you can technically still negotiate with another and be in touch with them - you don't have to withdraw from others, but your spot may be gone if you choose to attend after the deposit date passes.
