Has anyone successfully contested their rejection from a law school? How did they do it?

If you are thinking about it, don't.
What grounds would someone possibly have to contest a denial?

Yes, it's called reapplying next year. Although you have to improve a major component of your application in order to have any shot.

You'd have to be pretty desperate to try this.

Only if they had new GPA/LSAT that came out after they originally applied, and even then success sounds rare. I've heard of it working, but not phrased as "contesting" a rejection, more along the lines of "politely requesting reconsideration based on new factors".
However, waiting and reapplying is usually TCR anyway, especially since by February most seats are gone.

It's my understanding that reconsiderations (aka contesting denials) are usually only allowed when the school / lsac/ or (sometimes) the OP has made an egregious mistake that would change the outcome of their decision. For example, if the GPA sent out on your academic report by LSAC was wrong and significantly lower than it actually is.
These situations are probably rare, and most prudent probably applicants probably catch the mistakes before a decision is rendered. But who know?! Give us more information.

I've said this before, but I'll say it again:
Outside admissions office. Trenchcoat. Boombox over head. "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel.

I think this works for other things than just law school admissions.

I have a friend appealed a rejection from Columbia and got in by saying she is the first child in family to go to college
