Thought I'd put this thread up since I hadn't seen one yet. Congrats to all who've been accepted! (And good luck to those still waiting!)

Edited to add stats and other relevant info for convenient reference:
169, 3.77.
Two MA's, almost done with a PhD (all in philosophy).
Submitted right after the new year (don't remember the exact date), accepted 1/18.

Checking in. I may still decide to attend UCLA if they give me enough of a scholarship (no money mentioned during the call and in the packet). I love SoCal and am planning to practice here anyway.

yay! This was my first choice... until I found out that sticker would cost the same next year as georgetown even if you're instate, and may even go up again the year after. Now I don't know what I'm going to do. But, Bruins for life!

Did they not offer you $? Your stats are about the same as mine (you're +1 on my lsat, -.07 on my gpa) and they made me an offer. Heard of others around the same #s who got offers too.

nope :-( I'm hoping I get in to USC with some money, which hopefully I can leverage. It sucks though, I would love to stay in CA, but since tuition is going to 45K and then 50K (and rumors of 55K), UCLA in-state could cost 10K more than Georgetown, and with a higher cost of living.

I'm flying out to UCLA to visit, but unless they make me a pretty damn good offer I have better options :/ ($$$$ at Illinois or Gtown/Cornell). I have some hard decisions coming up...

well, if I had known I'd be deciding between UCLA and Georgetown before I took the LSAT, I would have been very happy.

I will be attending the 2nd ASD. It should be fun!

Not sure if UCLA is my top choice or not at this point. I'd love to stay in California, but the state economy and foreseeable tuition increases are frightening.

That was a minor issue for me too, since I teach Monday nights. But I think I'm just going to give my students the night off.

Would love to get together with others afterwards!

Checking in as well. Went to UCLA last night to sit in on a 1L con law class and I loved it. It was my first time in a law classroom and witnessing the way class discussions are conducted. I'm hoping I can leverage some money from UCLA as well, just not really sure how to go about since I don't exactly have any offers I can use.

I'm posting this in a couple of UCLA related threads so apologies to anyone who reads this more than once.

Anybody have any thoughts on, or success with, scholarship negotiations (with UCLA specifically, or other schools in general)? Here's my situation:

UCLA offered me $75,000. Their most recent figures put total cost of attendance over three years (inc. COL) at approx $75,000/yr OOS, $65,000/yr in-state. Given the ease of establishing CA residency, that puts total COA over three years at $205,000 (one year at out-of-state, two years at in-state). Take out the $75,000 scholly and I'm at $130,000.

Texas offered me an In-state exemption + $9,5000/yr. Total value over three years is $76,500. For an in-state student their COA is 45,170/yr. Subtract the $9,500 and that's down to $35,670/yr. Over three years that comes to $107,010.

COA difference over three years then comes to $22,990.

UCLA and Texas are tied at 15th in the rankings. Though the total $$ value of their offers are only $1,500 apart, I'm wondering if UCLA might be willing to negotiate vis-a-vis the overall difference in COA?

Anybody have any thoughts on this or experience with the process (w/r/t UCLA specifically or just in general)? How to go about presenting it? etc. Any thoughts/advice/suggestions appreciated.

I prefer UCLA to Texas for a variety of reasons (though that is subject to change), but that approx. $23,000 difference over three years looks like a big number to me.

Thanks for any help/advice!

Barney's is credited. Brewco and Maloney's are always filled with undergrads. Also, Barney's has better beer.

Do you guys think it would be bad form to negotiate a scholarship with UCLA when I am not sure I'd attend even if they give me what I'm asking for?

if you're pretty sure you won't attend, then yes.

I'm not sure I won't attend. I'm just not sure I would even if they gave me exactly what I asked for. I kinda just want to have it as an actual option instead of a hypothetical one when I make my decision.

you could tell them where you're in and what other schools have offered and see if they're willing to offer anything. But if you're going to ask for a specific amount, it would be rude to not take it.

looking at your profile, it would take quite a bit to put UCLA above Columbia lol
