is it smart to use a huge scholarship to one school as leverage at a higher ranked school? or is this not a smart idea all around?

Exactly. I've heard of admissions offers being revoked, but not for attempts at negotiation. I have already tried to negotiate for more $ with one school. I was unsuccessful, but they were really nice about it, and explained why, etc. No big deal.northwood wrote:im going to give it a try. worst case scenario is they say no, right?

Oh...Okay...I'm not sure how if they would take this into account with your initial decision or not...I've never heard of anyone doing this. As far as getting off the wait list, prevailing TLS wisdom is to send a letter of continued interest.
