Top Law Schools

After seeing so many comments about "layman's prestige"--though it is completely pointless--thought it would be funny to rank the top ten law schools in regards to "Layman's Prestige"

1. Harvard
2. Princeton
3. Georgetown
4. Stanford
5. Yale
6. Northwestern
7. Columbia
8. New York University
9. Michigan
10. Notre Dame

Been done before, but Cornell would have higher lay prestige.

Depends which state you are in. Notre Dame means less in certain states. If you are in Texas, UT law is practically worshipped.

It would be interesting to get some West Coast perspectives. Also, I think that many regard their state flagship university's law school as prestigious.

top ten from a westcoast perspective: HLS/YLS, Stanford, Columbia, NYU, Cornell, Georgetown, Northwestern, Chicago, Berkeley/UCLA/USC.

UVA gets very little love on the left coast. Penn isn't mentioned much either from what I have heard. And some of my friends I have talked to, after saying I applied to Michigan thought it was a "super safety" and "just a party school". Had no idea it was t10. Their UG reputation definitely affected that.

8. UChicago (they get very little recognition by the general public, even in Chicago)
9. UIllinois
10. John Marshall/DePaul/Loyola

Fuck no. Everybody knows Princeton is the only law school with prestige. Don't listen to any of these haters OP, I believe in you!

Very interesting. I know this thread may sound dumb to a lot of people, but what else are we supposed to do up here while admissions is on vacation haha

i'm from the south, and dook isn't really considered a "southern" school. it's UG is for northerners who couldn't get into ivy, and it's law grads for the most part don't stay in nc or even the south.

with that disclaimer, it is a good school, as much as it pains me to say it

So your friends know nothing about Michigan's undergrad then? No one I know would call Michigan a party school.

Yeah, they probably know nothing, but in all honesty many huge division 1 programs are subconsciously linked to a "party school" classification. Especially schools with storied football programs because of the alcoholic traditions that come along during the season.

Lay prestige is definitely regional.

Ranking Law Schools In California (from my experiences):

Vanderbilt sounds familiar, but most likely because of the Vanderbilt family.
Nobody knows about WUSTL.
UPenn is always confused with Penn State.
Nobody would think of UVA.
If you mention UVA or Michigan, people will just think they're "state schools" which surely rank below California's UC's.
Cornell is one of those schools many have heard of, but few know anything about (including that it's an Ivy)
Chicago doesn't have much lay prestige. Same with Northwestern. Mostly off the radar here.
Berkeley is highly respected and if asked, most Californians would rank it right behind Harvard/Stanford/Yale (probably in that order).

It's hard to discuss law schools with friends/family who know nothing about law schools. I got the Michigan viewbook, and a friend laughed and made a comment along the lines of "why would you want to go to a public university in Detroit for 3 years.. there's no way you'll apply, right?"
