Accepted to Maine via status checker dated yesterday! I have a letter sent 12/6 under mailings, no email sent.

do you live in maine?

Nope, I live in New England though, and I would love to live in Maine someday.

Yep, that was me too when I lived there until college. Moving away makes you appreciate it a bit though.

OP, I don't really know much about the school, but I know plenty about Portland if you're curious.

i've only lived here for 2 years, moved here from the midwest.

Interesting... Waitlisted via status checker 12/6. This was really a safety school so I don't care. I'm in at a higher ranked school and on the waitlist at much higher ranked, oh well. Didn't see this one coming though.

im in here too. I was born in Portland and have since moved away; let me tell ya, nothing like living in FL to make you appreciate Maine.

As much as I love Maine, it's probably unlikely that I'll end up there without significant $$ (which I am not sure they give out). I'm in-state for UConn, and have fairly strong numbers to get in there, so it'd be hard to justify Maine out of state over UConn in state. I'm also hoping for $ at some schools a bit higher ranked.

I applied because I would be perfectly happy spending the next 3 years in Portland and the next however many after that living and working in Maine & I wanted to have a safer option. I hesitate to say that Maine was my safety, because I like the school and would be happy graduating from there, but I guess it sort of was.

I just received an acceptance letter from Maine today. I am very excited about it, and I am very surprised that it only took them two weeks to decide.

Does anyone know when they decide scholarships? No scholarship information was sent along with the letter, but they did say that all accepted students are considered. I am just curious if that means accepted students are offered scholarships later in the year or if it means that we are considered upon acceptance and that I have not been awarded anything.

Aside from scholarship business though, can anyone tell me a little about Portland? What is it like living there? How tough are the winters? Are the black flies as bad as people say? Is it liberal or conservative? How is the nightlife? Do you need a car? Etc.

Not going to UMaine, but I grew up in Portland and know the area well.

1. It's a small city. It doesn't really have a very "busy" feeling to it at all, and everyone is pretty laid back. Weekends there can be a ton of fun. You'll definitely get to know the Old Port, which is a small area right on the water loaded with restaurants and bars.

2. Black flies aren't going to be a problem in Portland. I grew up in the Portland area and I never really had an issue with them. I think they're a much better issue along rivers and inland. Either that, or I just got use to them, but I don't think that's the issue.

3. Tends to be pretty liberal. Northern Maine is very conservative, though. I think the republicans have the governor and both houses, but that was not the way it was a few years ago.

4. There's not a ton of public transportation, as far as I know, though I never really needed it. Probably need a car.

5. Winters can be pretty rough. Definitely not atypical for it to be snowing in April or for there to be huge snow drifts on the side of road through April. Also, the temp tends to stay in about the 0-20 range, though it's not rare for it to go below zero. It's what you'd expect from Maine

As long as you can deal with the winters, it's a great place to be.

I sent my app a couple of days ago. From what I've read I really liked the school but I have some reservation about it considering I've never been up there and I'm not sure if I would like to live there.

Looking forward to hearing back. I went complete on the 10th. Although it's been REALLY cold in Ohio for the past week, and all I can think about is that I don't know if I could survive Maine.

I doubt anyone will see this since apparently there are only 4 or 5 of us applying here but I'm in via status checker

Reading your posts prompted me to check my status, and I am in. Anyone know how their scholarships are once they come out?

I e-mailed the admissions people and they said that they would send out awards in mid February.

So, are all of you going to Maine? I am thinking about it. It really depends on scholarship for me. I will probably go wherever I get the most scholarship.

Scholarship will be the big decider for me. I received a solid scholarship from Syracuse, so I am hoping to use some leverage with that and hopefully some other ones once they come out. I wonder if I can talk them into allowing NY to be considered New England? That would be ideal to get a few thousand off tuition.

i am waiting to see if i got into higher ranked schools. money will mean a lot, too. it all sort of depends on my personal situation and how far i'm willing to go from home. maine is far, for me!

I'm glad I'm not the only one...I was getting lonely.
Maine is one of my safety schools but it's by far the cheapest which makes go up on my list a lot. It all depends on scholly and in to what other schools I get in.
I'm from TX so it is pretty far, which I don't mind and it will be a nice change from 2-3 season years.
Edit: I heard Portland is really nice and since there aren't any other law schools in the state, I'm guessing there won't be that much competition. There market there is small of course so who knows

It didnt come with the letter? I was hoping it would. How long did it take for the letter to come in after the acceptance email/status change?

Postmarked the 31 and I'm in TX. I'm surprised it arrived so quickly

I was accepted the 31st and still don't have my letter (in Ohio). I'm pretty sure that I won't go, and I won't even consider it unless I get a lot of money. I am getting decent money from good t3 schools, which are better backups for me than maine until I start hearing from schools of higher rank. in another life i'd be totally down, but it's just too far from my lovely BF!
