Weren't they passing out fee waivers like candy this year? Successful strategy, I guess.

Well with "ED to UVA" being TCR on TLS this year, I'd say that was to be expected.

UVA is probably the most loved/hated school on this site. I'd say more TLS posters go to UVA than anywhere else, but it also gets a lot of mud thrown its way.

What kind of mud? I'm hungry for some criticism. I've been researching the school for a while (and will be going there) and all the criticism I hear is empty, and kind of arbitrary. Like to "fratty" or something like that.

Its not particularly substantive. Mostly just the popped-collar fratty jock type of stuff. Duke gets it too, but not as bad as UVA.

Is the ultra low acceptance rate due to them wait listing basically every (qualified) applicant who did not apply ED?

Yeah that is below average. Cornell's increased by 50% or something crazy like that. Michigan's increased by 25% I think.

A lot of people also dislike them for their YP practices and their ridiculous number of fee waivers to increase selectivity.

This is VERY common for UVA. They do that every year. No hating... I like UVA well enough. Just the truth. Every school has different strategies they employ for different reasons, just like some schools are bound up for some reason (UVA must admit 40% VA residents, for example). And fee waivers are one of UVA's strategies. Every single year they give out many, many fee waivers. And they are oftentimes given out to people for whom they would be a very big reach.
